I've searched and read every thread related to swapping a 5spd into an auto 3rd gen runner. I've got a 99 limited runner and a 98 ext cab v6 5spd donor taco. I've got all the parts required but I need to know if the engine ECU off the taco will work on the runner. I'm trying to get everything sorted out before I tear into it because its my dd. If anyone has done this hit me up. I'd like to talk to someone before I screw my only ride up.

 

More than likely the answer is no, it's not a plug and play situation. You need to get a wiring diagram for both years and verify compatability on that. More than likely you're looking at needing to switch some ECU pinouts to get it to work.

 

hope that pilot bearing fits in the auto crank ive heard sometimes it dont...when i did a 5 speed swap in my 91 truck i just jumped 2 wires off the nuetral safety switch..the 5 speed is not that computerized as the auto...the harness for the transfercase switches should just plug right in

 

Cool. When I do it, I don't want the check engine light on, and also how do you get the clutch start cancel to work. Is it best to just leave that out. I'm looking forward to changing it over. Does anybody know of any way to tell whether its got the hole for the pilot bearing machined out without taking it apart. That would save alot of body damage cause if I get this together and get in there to find that it doesn't, I'm liable to beat the ☺☺☺☺ out of something.

 

good thread! Let me see if I understand what your trying to do here. Take a slushbox and replace with a 5sp. I would love to do the very same thing.
Could you take the manual trans ecu and plug it into your exhisting harness? Isint the transfer case different between auto and manual. I really hope that some of the really smart toyo heads can figure this out.

 

I hope so. I've read just about every thread relating to this and every tech write up. I need to organize my parts and compare the ECU on both. The only thing I don't like about the runner is the auto tranny. I'm also planning to do a manual hub conversion too.

 

what do you plan on doing with your auto when after your swap???

Hey, I'm planning on converting it in mid Aug. I've got a guy at the Toyota dealership getting some wiring diagrams and such together for me. When he gets back to me i'll let you know. As far as parts go you'll need a fly wheel, tranny/t-case, clutch kit, master cylinder, brake and clutch pedal assembly, lines to plumb the master cylinder and interior trim. The dealership quoted me 75 bucks for the shifter console. I don't know if that's reasonable or not. I might be forgetting something.

just a few more weeks. I've got to do the timing belt and water pump before I tackle this. I'm just going to get it running with the cel and maybe one day i'll get the balls to change out the dash harness to make it like factory.

 

Shipping would probably be a problem, but I still have all the pieces from an '02 Taco for a 5 speed conversion. Transmission, Transfer case, levers, pedal assemblies, switches, ect.

Mechanically, about all that would be left to acquire would be a flywheel and a clutch kit.

I've actually been following your ad and wish that shipping wasn't going to drive the price so far up the scale (how much do you think it'd be to LA, CA?). If I had the time to drive out to Colorado, I'd definitely be in the market. What makes me sad is when I'm finally 100% ready to go, your parts will be gone. Tis life. I'm envious of whom ever gets the parts.

I have located a local 4runner 5spd but need the rest...getting ready for the possible 1uz swap...

 

I am lucky because i've got a taco that I destroyed as a teenager for parts. Well, I wouldn't call it lucky but things worked out for the best. I bought a 97 std cab v6 5spd with a blown motor for 2k and put my old motor in it. Now i'm using the rest of the drivetrain so I don't have a pile of cash rusting in the barn.

It just came to mind that my auto diff might be geared different than the manual. Did the autos come with 4:10's?

 

im kinda iffy because if u got a 2wd truck and since 5spd v6 are all 4wd how do you expect to run the swap without the 4wd ecu freaking out in a 2wd truck.

 

I don't know, put a manual tcase in and manual hubs.
