Is it a bad idea to run without shocks for a day or so to "settle" the suspension after installing a 4" suspension lift? I had heard from a few people that you can settle the suspension by doing this, but is it dangerous? I want to do things up right. Could you drive it without shocks for a day if you had to?

You can totally drive without shocks. In fact I did a whoel run without a rear shock. I didn't even notice it....but that was only one shock.

You may experience body roll or a lot of bouncing. Shocks merely dampen impatcs and keep excessive bouncing at bay.

I would definitely take it easy if you drive without the shocks. I'd be curious to see your impressions of on/off.

 

If you are driving on the road, I wouldn't suggest running without shocks. Very likely to cause an accident and hurt yourself and destroy the truck.

Just jump on the bumpers like a trampoline for a while to settle the suspension.

 

It'll be interesting to drive without shocks, and I would bet that if you got in an accident you'd have a hard time explaining to the cops and the insurance company why you didn't have any shocks.

 

shocks are for wimps...just like sleep and water...

I drove a samurai around with 35's and no shocks on the highway...while it was possibly the single scariest thing i have ever done in my life, and I have jumped out of airplanes and swam with sharks etc...it was pretty cool.
I am not entirely sure I gained anything from the experience other than a complete and utter respect for hy steer and a bone chilling fear of bump steer.

I have done it twice on my previous 95 runner. The first time was a 600 mile weekend, no issues. But I had REALLY good springs (Alcan)that were stiff. Just before I sold it I put some taco rear leafs on, had to drive to and from the alignment shop before I found some shocks that would fit the /\ and stock height... on a smooth road it was fine, but I hit a section that was bumpy and at 30mph the rear was catching air!!! VERY UNSAFE!!! So I have had mixed experiances but dont reccommend it. And shocks will not have an effect on the "settleing" of your rig.

You didnt say what year/model.. but on most run of the mill bracket lifts the springs arent changed anyhow, so no worries....
