Where to begin.... I had rolled my previous 4runner, and bought another one with a bad motor and had a buddy swap in my motor\trans\clutch from the rolled one. When I first bought the one with a bad motor I had driven it a couple times and noticed that the only way my tranny would go into gears, is if I had the clutch ALL the way on the floor. Once the clutch was all the way on the floor, I only had to let it out about 2" until the truck is rolling full speed. So I just assumed its a bad clutch, no worries as the clutch from my rolled 4runner had 6K miles on it. The entire clutch assembly is swapped over now, and its doing the same thing! The truck rolls once the clutch is 2" from the ground, and grinds gears. Is this a pedal adjustment? The clutch was perfect in my last truck.

yeah, bleed it gooooood, and maybe before that, swap in the clutch bits from your old, known good clutch system. it could be a pinhole in the line, the reservoir not holding vacuum, all sorts of things that could be fixed by using your old parts.

 

I don't think it has anything to do with air or leaks in the lines. He bled it before he gave it back to me, and fluid level is not dropping. Is there a way to adjust the pedal itself to bring the engagement point out further?

 

The pedal adjustment is in the cab where the clutch pedal attaches to the master cylinder. The shaft from the master cylinder threads into a round part that attaches to the clutch pedal. The shaft has a nut on it that locks it onto that part. Loosen the nut and turn the shaft so it comes out of that round part then tighten the nut back on it. There are specifications in the manual for how high the clutch is suppose to be, but I just adjust it until it feels right. Make sure the pedal still has some freeplay after it is adjusted.

 

Check to make sure the clutch slave cylinder is hooked up correctly. Mine got real weak wearing out and allowed it to shift how it sits. Acted just like you describe. Changed the cyclinder and made sure it was installed correctly and it's been fine since.

Also check to make sure the piece of metal the slave hooks to is not tilted and is up in the trany right. Mine had quite a bit of play.

 

did you have the flywheel resurfaced? it could be catching and holdin the clutch disc, same goes with the pressure plate. also on some new clutches theres an anti rust coating on them that likes to melt and make the pressure plate sticky a little bit if you don't clean it off first.
