Safari Rack Pros and Cons

Yeah, the title says it all, and im considering buying one. my main question is, will i still be able to throw my jon boat and 2 kayaks up there without having to worry about it? Also just wondering what some other disadvantages are to having them. thanks

edit: i dont throw them up there all at the same time

I use mine on and off.

Pros -
Looks just plain cool
Holds lots of lights (and I like lights!!)
More storage for extra gear

Cons -
1 to 2 mpg difference

From my experience, there is no extra noise from the rack. I've never had a clearance issue with it. Its just plain strong. I don't know how other ones or made, but the one I made for my 4runner is STOUT. When securely mounted with my custom mounting stuffola, I can hang my 150 pound body off the side with no budging. It has also supported the weight of my much larger friend on a crazy night of really stupid stuff. I say go for it. Just don't complain when your gas mileage goes down.

By the way, for the gas mileage, I plan on making some kind of metal front piece like the thule racks to try and improve aerodynamics a touch. Prolly look pretty dang on cool too.

fairing

I run a Thule Playpen. I used the Thule fairing for a bit and I noticed a decrease in MPG (3.0 with 5-speed). I then took the fairing off and noticed that I obtained my original MPG (within .5). I have not used the fairing since. It does cause some clearance issues in some places, but not as much as it does with my bike(s) or boat on top. My girlfriend did have to get on top of it to raise a tree branch up while we were on a trail with our boats on top. Go for it, I love mine.

I have a standard Thule rack for my mountain bike and/or skis. I've noticed about 10-12 miles less on a full tank with my slushbox 3.0. I do have the fairing, as well. I've run without the fairing and it tends to whistle at highway speeds, and the MPG difference is negotiable.

I had bad luck with mine, But I think it was just me, I now have 2 4" cracks going from the top of my rear window up past each side of the wing.

I gave it away but wish I had it back, I wanted to remount it over the passenger area and since the rear roof is cracked I plan to 4HUM it now.
