Just about the only thing that went right for us this weekend was getting this loadwarrior mounted up this weekend...

We're still not too sure about the tire since it is so tall sitting up there. I can definately feel the drag on the truck with that thing up there. If anyone wants pics of mounting or anything let me know and i can take care of those tomorrow after school. Enjoy

 

You've got a sharp looking 1st gen Brandon. I really like that rack up there. Make a mount for the spare tire, and only put it up there when you wanna look real cool. Im trying to make a mount for mine now.

 

Looks good... I like the tire mounted up there because it screems "look at me I offroad!"

Mounting it on the hood would be even better although I dont think you could get away with that vision like a safar truck can

 

Looks good how is it mounted, pics would be nice? Also it seems in the picture that your TJM bumper is bent up...is it just me?

 

We used the mounts that came with it and drilled thru the roof. The TJM is bentup, i rear-ended someone and it waffled the right side. We took a 50-ton press to it to straighten it out, it could use some more work but we are lazy and dont mind how it looks now.

 

that's a sick looking 1st gen, thats the sort of look i'm aspiring to some point in the future...and i like that roof rack you stuck on there, i gotta say, the tire looks great, but feels really bad eh? just like you said, feeling the drag, bummer how that is...i think i might go for the rear sway tire carrier on a TJM or ARB rear bumper...

Glad you got it mounted up man.. Easier than it seems like it should be, isn't it? On the spare tire mount it as far to the rear of the basket as you can. That way the fairing will be able to do its' job and throw the air over the tire. Mine is just temporary till I can build my tire carrier for the rear. Here's a pic of it mounted all the way back:

Did your mounts end up any different? I'm hoping to run wiring for lights and stuff up there soon.. Still trying to figure out a good place to run a harness through the top. Your truck really is looking great!

I am looking to do that to my 1st gen, I worried that the roof wont be able to support it. How much stuff have you had up there at one time?

 

Thanks for all the replies guys. I will take your advice amgraham and put it in the back. Only problem is you have got a 31x10.50s on a 15x7 wheel and i have a 33x12.5s. My wheels that i ride on are 15x8, but the 33x12.5 spare that was given to me for free is mounted on a 15x10. I am not complaining its just that this thing sticks up there really high. The only thing we have thought about is to get some type of water tight fastening device and have to drill another hole running all the wires through it. If you come up with anything please let me know.


I have had my entire body weight up there on it (around 150lbs) and the weight of the tire (around 40lbs). The rack was very slightly bowing in the center but the actual roof didnt have any bow in it whatsoever.

 

The top itself can support a good amount of weight. Me and two ladies have gotten up on top and jumped around (yesterday actually. football + rednecks = drunken redneck) and it didn't even dent.

 

Yeah.. I realize that your spare is a lot wider. Still, I think the aerodynamics should be better with it in the rear. As far as the wiring I'm probably gonna have to just drill a hole to run the wires through and just silicone the crap out of it. I'm thinking I might be able to find a junction box to mount up top so it's not as vulnerable to the water. I'll let you know if I come up with anything (will probably be a few weeks at least before I get to the lights).

As far as the weight capacity, it seems much sturdier than mounting to a factory roof rack. I can get the top to bow a little bit by pulling back and forth on the rack but I really wouldn't have any qualms filling it with luggage and stuff. I currently just have my spare, hi-lift, and shovel up there. I can't wait to get that spare out of there though so I can use that as cargo space (it takes up a lot).

 

I envy that setup.

Looks good, it's light weight, on a 1st gen, and it's mounted super LOW. Can't get any better then that.

Can you by any chance show some mounting pix from the inside and close ups from the drill/silicone job you did on the roof of your hard top too. I know its an old thread but I'm just barely starting up my 89 4runner and all the help will be good for me lol

By the way what is the size of your roof rack. I have been looking around and keep finding some but look too small more like for cars. I seen yours has somehing like 15bars going on the rack and the ones I find only have 10
