Unhappy 85 toyota 4x4 wont start

hello. i just recently bought a 1985 toyota 4x4 with a 22re. i got it for 1600. it has a 5 inch lift, 33" super swampers, it is sr5, 4:88 gears, locked. i thought it was a good deal for 1600 even tho it didnt start. i replaced the starter and the positive battery wire that connects to the starter. it still wont start. i can roll start the truck and it drives great. i replaced the fuel, air, oil filters and changed the oil. it has a new battery. it will probabbly need a new head gasket soon, but i dont think that would be why it wont start, would it. the 22re is in a crank, no start condition. the starter cranks the motor but it doesnt fire. can anyone help me please. i really want to get this truck up and running

You need to be a little more clear on what you consider as the problem. Reading your post is difficult to understand what your problem is.
Tip when asking a question dont include anything that can confuse people. such as the cost, and when asking about a no start issue dont include the gear ratio or tire size.

But your issue more than likely is a wire has came off the starter that needs to feed your ignition will cranking.

the starters rarely need to be replaced. these starters are similar to chevy starters there is the heavy wire from the battery and then the activator wire. its hot only when the key is all the way forward. check it.

We need more info on what it does when you try to start it. Does it crank fast, slow, or not at all (click)? Each one requires a different remedy.

Now that I have re-read this a few times.... I missed the part saying your replaced the starter.

You can bump start it and it runs fine?
When you try to start it the engine turns over but doesn't start?

We can definitely help you out, but as stated we need a little more info and clarity. Also do not be afraid to use the Enter key and break up the paragraphs making it easier to read and itemize your trucks symptoms.

Oh another question.... after you bump start it and run it long enough to get it to normal temp and then turn it off, does it start back up with the key, or no?

i checked all the ground straps and they are good. there is a wire that goes from the ignition coil to somewhere underneath the throttle body that is all taped up and looks like there might be something wrong with it. i dont know what its for and i cant find it in the manual or chiltons book. does anyone have any ideas what this wire could be, or if it would make any difference in starting the vehicle if it were replaced.

It sounds like a line coming off the main harness. Does it run along the firewall all the way to the coil?

no it goes from the coil, over the head and the down underneath the intake. it is just one continuous wire and is not part of the harness.

Where the POS wire hooks to the battery, there should also be a smaller wire that leads to the fuse box. So the + on the battery should have two wires hooked to it. One goes to the starter the other smaller to the fuse box. Do you have the one to the fuse box hooked up?

At least that's how my 84 is set up.

Check your fuses. Its easy enough to do. I am confused as to why you replaced the starter when the engine would crank over normally. Did you try 4Crawlers fuel pump test jumper?

You don't have to read anything. By shorting the plug you?re just making the pump run whenever the key is turned ?on?.
