noise from timing cover?

hey guys i noticed the other day that sometimes i hear a grinding noise coming from the timing cover area. It almost sounds like the belt or one of the cam sprokets grinding on the cover. Has anyone had this problem? It doesn't happen all the time. Any sugestions? Sorry motor is a 3.0.

Assuming we are talking about the 3.0, there are two idler pulleys and a water pump behind the timing cover. The bearings in these pulleys will eventually wear out. It would probably be a good idea to remove the cover and have a look around.

timing noise

I have also heard noise under the cover from a piece of the belt coming loose and slapping or rubbing the cover. It would come and go at first, then was constant. The truck ran for a while like that then the belt was changed when the head recall was done.

i am going to have the t blet replaced on sat. I called toyota and they had no record of a timing belt being done before. The motor has 151,000 miles I found out that the head gaskets were done in march of 1998. almost 10 years ago.
