newbie picked up new ride
hey guys i am new to the toyota world of 4x4's. i just picked up my 1st runner it's a 1994 sr5 with the v6 (motor is a pig) its black and in great shape only two rust spots on it, both on the rear hatch and small. other than that it is great. i paid 2600.00 for it. it has 151,000 mile on it, i think i stole it for that price i have seen some in bad shape and with more miles for more money. i just painted the frame with some pro-15 black paint to keep the rust off. i hope to be weelin soon. see ya, pat.

2nd Gen 4Runner info
Right on. Welcome aboard! I have a 94 V6 Manual as well. I paid $1000 more for 5k less miles. Sounds like you got a good deal. If you are new to the 2nd gen 4runners here's a quick list of some of the things I learned about my rig and thought might save you some time.
If you call Toyota at 800-331-4331 Mon - Fri, 5:00am - 6:00pm Sat, 7:00am - 4:00pm pacific Time and give them your VIN number they can tell you what service campaigns (recalls) have been performed on your rig. There?s a head gasket issue but according to the current poll https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116/who-has-not-had-hg-issues-3vze-91607/ has not been as big of an issue as I worried about.
There?s a recent recall on the steering rod relay campaign number 50N. The old relay rods have a greater risk of breaking. One of the guys on yotatech noted that the new one bent while wheeling. He had the dealer put in a second relay rod and it bent too. Apparently he never had a problem with the original one. The steering rod relay replacement comes with a free alignment.
The rig has ADD not hubs for the 4WD, the engine is a 3VZE. If you look on your driver?s door jam and see the code R150F that?s the transmission type. If the gear ratio is marked as G284 that means it's got a 8" gear, at a 4.3 ratio, and a 4 pinion open diff. There?s great differential info here http://www.brian894x4.com/Gearratiosanddiffs.html The transfer case is: VF1A chain.
The saggy rear end on these is common. Getting new OEM springs will not fix it, it will just sag again, get aftermarket. Downey as well as other companies makes rear springs just for that issue. The ones I got are the heavy duty ones, are 20% stiffer, and 1.5 inches higher. When I loaded up my tools and stuff in the truck I was thankful I got the heavy duty ones. You will need to get new longer shocks if you get new rear coils. Coils and shocks from Downey $317.00. http://www.downeyoff-road.com/Suspen...ents/index.htm The largest tires you can put on without rubbing is a 31/10.5/15 (265/75/15). You can get a 32x11.5s with little or no rubbing but you will have to check the specific tire.
There?s a switch in the vacuum line going to the power steering that tends to develop a crack as it ages and then leaks.
The power steering pump o-rings tend to leak near this age and can be replaced instead of buying a whole new pump, there?s a kit available for it.

If you start having issues with it popping out of gear check the shifter bushings first. I had three places tell me it was the transmission/synchros that needed to be replaced and it was just the $17 shifter bushing. I found out later that the bushing is plastic and commonly wears out.
If your gas mileage is poor you might want to try Sea Foam first. There?s a huge thread on it. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...light=sea+foam and also https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...hlight=seafoam The PCV valve is not on the hose that goes into the crankcase cover next to the oil cap. It?s on the passenger side of the intake manifold. From the back of the engine, there is a barb vacuum connection, next to it, moving toward the front of the engine, there is another vacuum connection with three small vacuum hoses attached. Directly under that connection is an approximately 3/8" id vacuum hose connection that comes directly out and then U-tubes back under the intake manifold. The PCV valve is on the other end of that hose.
The metal on metal squeaking that occurs when the steering wheel is turned all the way to one side or the other is probably just the steering stops. You can get plastic caps or just grease them.
I?m sure there are lots more things that might be helpful but that?s what comes to mind at the moment. There?s a TON of stuff here on Yotatech forums. My girlfriend called me borderline obsessed when I found it because every time she called me I was pouring through them. There?s so much great information here from some truly knowledgeable people. By the way I hope my post doesn?t alarm ya. I?d venture to guess that if I were talking about a domestic vehicle the typing would make my fingers blister. I loved my rig before but I love it even more now. Stick around, you?ve got a great rig in my opinion

got pics just have to figure out how to post them. sorry to mention the runner is a auto. the power steering looks like it has leaked for a while or maybe is still leaking. i don't have a sag in the rear. i think the idle is a little low at about 750-800 rpm. i am going to put new plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, brake pads and rotors on this week. it runs good (a little choppy i think.) hope the new parts fix that. the motor does not blow any smoke and the oil looks very clean. i think a girl had the runner before me because i found some pictures and it had a college sticker on the back wiondow. some suny school in ny. i did notice the spare is covered with rust realy bad, i am thinking about taking it down and sand blasting it and painting it black.other than that under neath is very clean only small amounts of surface rust. And by the way i do have a 88 ford f-150 witha 4 inch lift and 35 inch bfg muds, i use this for going to the dump and beeating the crap out of it off road. i made a custom snorkel out of 3 inch pvc pipe. it has cut fenders and is real red neck
i am looking foward to my new toy the runner is so much nicer in sooooo many ways.:bigclap: i did check the hg recall and steering rod and both were done.
