yeah. anybody know where i can find some? i can see fresh green ethylene glycol leaking where the engine meets the transmission. the only thing i can think of is a freeze plug on the block that is hiding in the transmission bellhousing.

it's not a fast leak, i've just had to add some coolant to the overflow reservoir every 600-700 miles or so.

so ya, before i drop the tranny to replace a 3 dollar freeze plug, has anybody had any experience with stop leak that WON'T plug up my radiator? thanksssss!

 

There are no freeze plugs back there, so must be coming from somewhere else...

and I dont think they are made, as thats how they work.. they plug stuff up.

 

I would trace that leak, mine drips from there but actually travels there from my water pump.

 

check the heater core hoses.

There is also a small coolant hose on a block on the back of the intake. it is on the passenger side by the firewall. it's about a 3/8 hose and could be mistaken for a vacuum hose. Pressure test and fix the leak, I have seen many radiators and heater cores plugged by trying quick fixes.

 

I had a similar problem. Turned out to be a leaky hose connected to the valve that lets coolant flow to the heater core. on my truck the valve is just behind the intake plenum

 

there is no doubt about it. this leak is coming from the back of the engine inside the bellhousing of the transmission.

i pressure tested the system at 15 psi and there was an ever so slight drop (barely even noticeable) in pressure after a few minutes.

i added some bar's leak and followed the instructions word for word. this stuff looks and smells pretty nasty so i only added about 1/3 of the bottle. about a week has gone by and there is no green ethylene glycol leaking anymore. i plan on keeping my eye to make sure there are no future leaks.

i will probably flush the cooling system in the near future. that stuff was pretty nasty, but looks like it did the job. my radiator hasn't gotten plugged up... yet.

 

I did the EXACT same thing recently with a slight leak. No ill effects YET.

i had a slight leak way behind the plenum. Way to involved to change it out. I have had it in for quite a while and do not see any bad indications.

 

i have now ran 2/3 of the bottle and i am still seeing a slight leak. i will add the rest of the bottle and hopefully this leak will go away. if not then i'm in trouble.

 

I just rebuilt my 22re and I coulda sworn I pulled a freeze plug out of the back of the block. Had an old timer tell me once that black pepper will stop a leak if it aint real big, also heard the raw egg idea. dunno never tried it. Both sound kinda hokey though.

i found out today there is a freeze plug on the rear of the block. i was at a junkyard and they had a 22re on an engine stand with the flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate assembly removed. there is a large freeze plug above the crank. unless there is a crack in the block, this is the only place the coolant can be coming from.

i am going to add another 1/3 bottle of the bar's leak tomorrow. we'll see what happens. if the leak doesn't go away, i'm probably going to flush the system. i can either live with the leak for a while until i need a new clutch, or drop the tranny and replace the freeze plug and upgrade the clutch while i'm in there. since i'm attending a community college automotive program and have access to a fully loaded shop with all the tools in the world, i can most likely drop the tranny myself with the assistance of my instructors. i won't have to pay for labor, although it's going to be a major PITA!

 

The whole point of these quick cheap fixes is to plug stuff up. There is nothing make anywhere that will plug a leak, but not plug up your radiator.

You'd be better off to just do it right the first time, rather than risk destroying your engine. And remember, just becuase you cant see the plugs, and the truck doesn't overheat, doesn't mean its not happening.

 

Very true.. my gauge never hit the red, but I think I got warm and slightly warped the head, which is why my HG blew.. .but all indicatinons were fine.. guess I'll know when I get the head back from the shop. I am takinig it in tomorrow.

If you have access to a shop just drop the tranny and do it correctly.
