I just started looking at the wiring diagrams for both the stock 3.0 cruise (vacuum), and the 3.4 cruise (electrical). My plan is to use the stock truck wiring, the steering wheel controls, then use the 3.4 cruise computer and actuator module.

I know that I could re-use the stock cruise, but I was never very happy with how the vacuum system worked. It had a bad tendency to drop out on the slightest of hills. I can't help but think that the electronic system from the Taco would work much better.

It looks as though it should be do-able. The only real big question mark I have is whether the speed sensor on the back of the guage cluster of the truck will be similar enough to work with the Taco cruise computer.

Before I get super involved in this, I thought that I would ask if anyone else has done this. I'd rather not re-invent the wheel, if I don't have to.

The basic info is: 1990 SR5 5sp truck, retaining the stock transmission. 2002 Tacoma 3.4 5sp donor.

Any suggestions, pics or diagrams would be appreciated, and, if it doesn't pan out, I'll be sure to document my project for others' future reference.

 

 

I'm suprised about that, since you have a 5 speed. At first I thought you were talking about an auto down shifting. Once I did have my 3.0 auto drop out of cruise competely but it was a very steep mountain pass.

Nope, mine would drop out on some of the slight hills between Denver and Cheyenne, and that's only 1,000 feet over 100 miles!

I suppose that there may be a problem with my actuator, or such, but I've never been that satisfied with the original system, even when it was new, and I've always had pretty good luck with electronic systems on other vehicles. Vacuum just doesn't seem like the best way to do a cruise control, IMO.

I figure that I have the Taco parts, and I'll try them out -- but I'll do it in such a way that I can go back to the original, if the Taco stuff doesn't work out.

I guess I'll be converting my system. I want to use my existing steering wheel controls, rather than finding a way to mount the Taco stalk. I'll start working up a pin out conversion on paper, and go from there.
