Question 96 4Runner MT fluid qty and type?

I posted in the maintenance section, but no replies (and I am impatient).

I did a search, and only found info on an Auto tranny from Jalaber's site.

Anybody know the exact qty in quarts for the 5 speed?

What type, 75W-90? (I want to go with Amsoil MTL)

Please help if you can. Thanks guys.

When I changed my dad's tranny fluid, I think I used around 4.5-5 quarts.
I just used a generic 75-90 gear oil

Thanks skoal. I wonder why the 4WD man is less than the 2WD?

Anyone know?

Cool

Ahem....
According to the Haynes Manual:

Manual Transmission Lubricant: API GL-4 or GL-5 SAE75W-90 gear oil.
Front diff: API GL-5 SAE 75W-90 hypoid gear oil
Rear diff above 0 deg F: API GL-5 SAE 90 hypoid gear oil
Rear diff below 0 deg F: API GL-5 SAE 80w-90 hypoid gear oil

I don't know what the API spec is but thought you might want to look for it.

I would hazard to guess that there are more gears in the 4wd and thus less room for lubricant?...

I was thinking of changing my MT fluid too (87 Runner) when I asked the guy at Napa - I know, I know :pat: - he asked me if I was "gunna drop the pan". What the heck? Drop what pan, I was going to unscrew the drain plug! He said if I just dropped the pan I would get very little of the old fluid out and that I should go some place and have them flush it. I don't want to pay $80+!! Does he have any clue what he's talking about? I was reading through my Chilton, and there is no pan, but did he mean plug? Ok I'm begining to ramble.

My questions are, can I just take out the drain plug and refill? And can I refill with Amisol brand, or is mixing possible non-syntho with syntho a no-no

Anyway, thanks for some guildance

Yes, you just drain and fill. Dont forget the drain and fill plug washers from the dealer.

Figures... So any problems refilling with Amisol brand if it could have been filled with non-syntho before. I have never changed since I got it so I don't know

Thanks

No problems. I am in the same boat. I am going with Amsoil, but I have done lots of Manual Trans changes, just not on my "new" 96.

Go for it! Now I just have to get some Amsoil...
