How do I get the alternator out?

How to do i get the alternator out of my 88 4runner 22re? the FSM and other manuals i have read... http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/mainte...nator_brushes/ Say just pull it out... no big deal. Only problem is everything is in the way, powersteering pump on top and rad hose under it. So anybody have a trick, becuase i don't want to drain my rad as it's like 25 degrees right now.

I've found that the only way I can get it out is after the lower rad hose is removed.

When i had my 86 i had to take the lower hose off and go out from the bottom

I tried and tried to get it to clear my lower radiator hose without removing it, but in the end I couldn't do it. Check out this thread for more info: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116/89-toyota-22re-idle-loping-96993/

I didn't remove mine....an '86. I had to change it out in an O'Reilly parking lot one night. But, that was a while back and don't remember what all I did. I do remember it was a pain and did do "something" to get it out. Geez...I'd have to go back and look under there to remember. I can get to that later, but you're probably gonna have it out by then.

Dang, i read that i might be able to remove the power steering pump and distributer to get it off is this true? I just got all the air out of the radiator and i am not looking forward to draining it agin.

I've replaced mine 5 times and never had to remove any hoses to get it in or out. It should just come out. You did take your front skid off right? You have to take it out on the passenger side of the lower radiator hose, if you haven't already tried that.

IMHO, that's much more work than draining the rad and removing the lower hose.

Yeah, just put a big bucket under there, and pull the hose off. No need to remove the drain plug and whatnot, this way goes MUCH faster... And save the antifreeze, it works wonders for killin those devil squirrels.

It's not the work that he's worried about. I think it's the 20+ degree temperature outside....lol!

I drain the rad, use a bucket and then refill. Did it on the side of the freeway in North Dakota a few summers ago.

I've changed mine 5 times also and never took a hose off. I have A/C & power steering.
  1. Remove skid,
  2. remove the clips from the lower fan shroud section and
  3. remove the lower fan shroud section.
  4. Remove the battery ground post, then the hot wire and 4-pin connector on the alt.
  5. Remove upper alternator (adjuster) bolt,
  6. remove lower bolt (14mm?),
  7. use a pry bar between the block and the bottom of the alternator to pop it out of the bracket.
  8. Then use the bar to push forward the hardened steel sleeve in the front arm of the lower alternator bracket. This step will make it easy to put the alternator back into the lower bracket
  9. Carefully twist the alternator and bring it out through the enlarged opening on the bottom of the fan cowling.
  10. Reverse for installation,
  11. If there's any resistance when pushing the bottom of the alternator into the lower bracket, you didn't get the hardened sleeve pushed far enough forward. The back of the sleeve should be even with the back end of the front arm of the lower bracket.
  12. After installing the lower bolt, the belt, and the upper bolt on the alternator, use the flat pry bar between the block and the alt housing to push the top of the housing to the driver's side to tighten the belt. You will likely have to insert the bar from below the alternator.

Wow, 20* weather... Aint never see that round here. We put on parkas and thermals when it gets below 65 lol.

But hey, when was the last time you flushed your rad? If it hasn't been done in a while, nows a good time, plus gettin your mixture right for that cold weather couldn't be a bad thing. And it doesn't take long to get the air bubbles out. Just start er up with the engine cold, and keep the rad cap off, and wait till you no longer see bubbles. It'll stop before it starts to get hot enough to boil out.

And killin squirrels isn't cruel, tieing up the dead ones and using em as scarecrows to scare off the others would be. Not that i've done that or anything lol.

Comes out the bottom with P/S. I don't have that on mine and don't want it either. PITA to work around.
I don't remember pulling the hoses, but last one I did like that was 7 years ago.
