Backspacing

What is the proper backspacing for 35x12.5's on a 16x8 wheel on a 89 pickup with 4" suspension and a 3" body lift without rubbing? Thanks.

IMO, anything with 3.5" to 3.75ish" should be good.

Maybe, I'm running 315 75R16's (34.9"x12.4") on 16x8's and they look pretty square.

Running a wheel 4" narrower than your tire width is ideal for off-road (stronger bead), 2" narrower ideal for street use (better contact at higher PSI)

I've seen a 33x12.5 on 10" wheel aired down and it did fine though...

Usually the 4" lift kits recommend a maximum backspacing to clear the steering arms, usually in the 3.5" range as noted above. You can go w/ less backspacing. A guy in my club used to run 35x12.50 on 3.5" b/s rims, 4" suspension + 2" body lift.

I'm with 4Crawler. Right now I'm running 4" IFS lift with AR-23's (4.5" backspacing) with no body lift. My upper A-arms are about 1/2" from the sidewall on my 315's. However, I can stuff my rear axle inside the wells, no problem. A buddy of mine has a 92 Yota truck on 35's with a three inch body no suspension lift and PLENTY of clearance on his A-arms. Man I need a SAS!!!

Just to be sure then, if I run a rim 16x8 with a 4" backspacing and 315/75 tire then with the suspension lift the tire will be 1" from the upper a-arms correct (because of the a-arm to spindle spacer) ?

Ultimately it's up to you, but I would still run something under 3.75." I don't know what kind of rims your looking at. I like aluminums because they're light and I don't do much rock crawling so I'm not worried about banging them up. You all ready have the body lift so stuffing wheels on 3.5" backspacing should be no problem. What I don't want you to do is end up getting a set of 4" backspaced wheels, then dropping in wheelspacers because you dont like the results. I seriously considered getting 1" wheel spacers for a long time, but most SAS kits I've seen come with wheel spacers for the front (because the front axles are narrower than the '86ish and up rear axles). I didn't want to end up with 1" spacers in the rear and 1.5-2" spacers up front just to get the wheels to line up!!!!!! So I'm waiting.

Yep, my 35's fit great with 3.75" BS, no clearance issues to the control arms at all. Now my 285's on 16x8 with 4.5" BS aer too close to use chains without a 1/4" spacer...

15x8 is or 16x8 is all you really need on a toyota, besides you will have less fitment issues with a 8" vs 10". You may have to run a few psi lower to have a flat contact patch, but not enought to damage anything....

I have 33x12.50's on 15x8 rims that have 3.75 b/s with no lift or spacers and mine fit and flex fine. They just barely touch the front mudflaps at full steering lock.

The tires you have are slightly larger, but you have plenty of lift to compensate the extra 1" in diameter.

1st gen IFS rear axles are 3" wider than the SFA (like an 85 axle) so you use 1.5" wheel spacers up front. It really isn't an issue if you install them properly and maintain them. I've run several sets of wheel spacers now with no issues and my front is actually 1" wider than my front now, but on a trail rig...who cares if they match.

It really takes more than the 4" lift to allow 35's. I had to do some serious pounding... I think I also trimmed the fender a little on the aft outside edge.. The rear took a couple inches of trimming on the leading lower edge to allow the 35 to stuff as far as I wanted it too, which is up in there

I'm not arguing, I totally agree, but he said he has 3" of body lift too... That's what I meant by plenty.
My 33's don't toch at all, but at full compression, they are very close to the fenders. He wants 35's and has raised his truck 3" from the frame. This should compensate for the extra diameter.

With 4" Skyjacker and 35's. My main concern is interference with the suspension/steering components as they only offer 4 inches of B.S.. 7 inches of lift should be more then enough to clear the body of the tires. Thanks again.

Uh oh! I just bought a set of rock crawlers 16x8 with 285/75/16 tires that will go on my 89 p/u that will have a set of BJ spacers. I hope they dont rub the control arms since they are a 4" or a 4.25" backspacing which I can't remember.

That should be fine, it is just the stock (4.75") backspaced wheels that can have rubbing problems with certain size tires:

"Tires on rims with the stock backspacing of 4.75" might have tire rubbing issues with 31" or smaller tires.
* This is dependent on tire geometry, most clear but a few don't.
* This can be often be remedied by filing/trimming the end of the a-arm lip and/or using rim spacers. Rims with 4.5" or less of backspacing clear all tires known so far.
* A 1/4" wheel spacer is also an option for fitting stock wheels with clearance issues. "

For the 4" IFS lift kits, you can check with the kit mfg. to find out their maximum backspacing limit. Most will list it in their installation instructions and typically is in the 3.75" - 3.5" range. Any more backspacing and the wheels or tires will rub on the suspension components.

Ok, after reading this thread, I should be able to fit the Rock Crawler 17x9 with 4.5" backspacing without clearance issues or worst case senerio, I'll need 1/4" spacers.

Looks like I'll be going ahead with my order this month unless someone tells me that they won't fit before then.
