So if the vin/door jamb says G144 does this mean that I have 4.88 gears? I searched but I want to make sure.

Are you saying you can regear it if you replace the carrier with a detroit? Or are you just saying that you can lock it? I am in the process of regearing and locking at least the rear. I want to at least do detroit in the rear with 5.29's. I already got my hands on on open front diff w/ 5.29's. I was under the impression that there is no way to regear my factory 4.88 rear diff.

How does the different carrier compensate for the offset pinion?

I have my OEM 4.88 gears on my Detroit soft locker. I have my stock ring and pinion and housing.

It has been working just fine the past 4 years.

I see, I was just talking about regearing, not locking. I know I can lock mine, but I want to regear and lock. I just misunderstood what you were saying, you got my hopes up for a second.
