Thumbs up 2002 Tacoma ISR and Elbow Mods done

I finally got around to doing these Mods to my wife's 2002 Tacoma Pre-Runner.

First I did my version of the "Elbow Removal"

Then on to the ISR Mod....
It was cheap to do on the Tacoma. $2.68 for a "T" and 48 cents for a 1.5" Plumbing end-cap so, a grand total of $3.16 plus tax.

All I had to do was plug the opening that was left after removing the silencer box and splice the FPR hose into the EVAP hose which is connected to the air filter box. Then remove the EFI fuse for a few minutes.

My wife then took it for a test drive.

She came back and said:
Damn, I thought you were just messing around and doing one of those "Guy things" just to be fiddling with my truck. I really noticed the difference in driving uphill. It shifts smoother and doesn't seem to work as hard as before.
Next Mod for her truck is a new muffler. She actually likes the sound of my Dynomax muffler.

Does she have a sister?

so you spliced your evap hose for your FPR?

Hmm,
I jury-rigged my cap (where you have your 1.5') to have an outlet so that the original source for the FPR wasn't lost.

I wonder which setup has better performance...

Dood.. You missed a piece!

In your bottom pic, there's a "U" shaped piece on the bottom of the intake pipe. That should go as well. There's a third piece on the '96s but I don't think it's there on yours.

And... The extension to the mod is to cap off the FPR nipple - yes, the one that you spent the $2.68 on the T to hook up.

I didn't think the "U" shaped part would make that much difference. If you think it will I'll pull that off too.

I haven't just capped off the FPR because I feel that my 4-Runner actually runs better with the "T" than with just capping the FPR line.

Someone else posted a Thread releated to capping off the FPR vs splicing it with a "T" and got better performance with the "T".

Ahh... nevermind then, I didn't know that you had done it with purpose.

My take on the "U" is that every little bit helps. I'm sure it's insigifigant in comparison to the large box, but for the price, why not?!

The "U" I'll pull off but not sure about the "capped" vs "uncapped" FPR issue yet.

I originally did the ISR mod with the "T" to the EVAP line and then later changed it to the "Plenum" I felt that the "T" was better for my 5-speed Automatic than the Plenum connection.

I originally did the FPR hooked up to the plenum, then loosehead showed me his with it capped.

I capped it, didn't notice anything. The a few weeks later I saw the thread to hook it up again.

I hooked it up and did notice a slight increase in low RPM snap.

Who knows?

This is something that may vary between Auto and STD transmissions and driving styles.

All I have is the "Seat O the Pants" Technology to determine these things.....LOL

I just got my BFG muds on when I did this mod so I really can't tell if I've got anything

I am noticing the reported delay in gear shifting for an auto though...
actually, now that I think about it, I was going reverse into my driveway one night and almost hit the door because the response to the pedal was immediate. I thought I'd slipped... maybe not?

For now, I'm leaving my FPR line hooked up straight to the cap. The "T" to the evap line looks tempting but until I know for sure exactly which one is better I'd rather not cut anything.

Hey Tacoma Dude what size are the exhaust pipes from the cat to the muffler on a Tacoma?? I'm at work so I can't go and measure them.
I'm thinking about ordering the muffler and exhaust tip today. I may go with the Dynomax Ultra flow instead of the Super Turbo.
The Ultra Flow is a straight through design unlike the Super Turbo.

Dynomax Ultra Flow

It's more expensive than the Super Turbo but looks a lot better plus it's stainless.

Also instead of the Bling-Bling Monza tip that I have - Summit has some nice Stainless tips.

Interesting... I missed that thread!

Since I'm running the SMT-5 now, I'd bet that I could cap or uncap and tune around either way. Dr. Z is swamped with work these days, so I'd best better go out and play on my own.

Thanks ALBPM!

Yeah, let me know what you find.

So far so good on uncapping the FPR line for me.

I raced and beat 2 vehicles this weekend.

1. Old Lexus LS400 (I dont get it, they should smoke me right?)
2. Nissan truck

I love my new found power.

Way to go, Paul. Looks like you've been having some fun!

Looks like a good choice on the muffler and tip, too. I'd be willing to bet that the Ultra Low would sound a lot like mine, although prolly not quite as loud, if you are going with the longer body, as you posted.

Sure is nice to get the wife's "Seal of Approval" on a mod, eh?!?!?!

Thanks, I ordered the Dynomax Super Turbo instead of the Ultra (better be safe and get what she likes) and a couple polished Stainless exhaust tips.
Super Turbo

I want to replace that huge Monza tip on mine with a slant cut stainless tip.

Anyone losing power with the ISR mod?

I'm only on my 2nd or 3rd tank of gas since I did mine but while I was driving on the freeway I had my cruise control set on 65 and everytime I hit a hill the RPM jumped from a little over 2K to 3K+!!!

I don't remember this ever happening with everything stock.

Is this normal? Am I still in the break-in period?
