1984 Transmission grinding, 1st kicks out
I have an '84 PU with the 5spd. 1st gear is virtually unuseable, if I hold firm constant pressure on the shifter and slowly let out the clutch at idle it will buck and then drop into gear.
I cannot apply any power whatsoever or it will kick and grind violently.
The rest of the gears feel great with the exception of the occasional grind into 2nd while on a downshift from 25mph.
I've been told it could be bad synchro's or a bent/broken shift fork.
How do I know if the clutch is worn and how do I adjust the free-play...any other adjustments?
The truck is stock with 235/75/15's and 122,xxx miles.

Have you replaced the shifter seat and bushing? They are known to cure the problems that you're having.
