86 22r Starting Problem

Hi folks,I'm new to this site. What a great find.I need some help with my old 86 Pickup.I,ve had her for 20yrs.I'm starting to have intermittent starting problems. When I push the clutch in to start it I sometimes just get a click, usually after about 5 or 6 tries it will start right up.Other days I have no problems,it will start right up on the first try. Also sometimes when I'm having trouble if I push in the clutch slowly and kind of move it back and forth their seems to be a sweet spot and it will start. It's getting kind of annoying.Any ideas? Thanks.

Here is a simple voltage test you can perform to isolate the cause of the problem:

If the tests shows no voltage the the starter solenoid, check the clutch cancel switch adjustment. If it shows good voltage the solenoid, then check the starter solenoid contacts:

I had the same problem Thax. First I just was able to jiggle the battery terminal, (was kinda corroded). so i filed em clean, was fine for awhile then it started randomly and the battery starter cable jingle didnt work so well....

then id turn key and itd fire up.

problem? Starter. Was failing slowly. Im no starter scientist but theirs a wire covered in a rubber casing that kinda wraps around half the starter and the rubber was so old on mine it just fell apart exposing the wire.. probably shorted the starter out? Dunno..

anyways, took it in, it failed, got a new one. truck starts everytime =)
