manual locking hubs HELP!

i recently posted a thread ( below ) and had a couple helpful responses. I have an up date on that. To test it out i drove my toyota around the hubs locked without the 4x4 on. Their was a loud rattling sound coming from the left wheel that i mentioned. BUT when i turned the 4X4 on the RATTLING SOUND STOPPED? Any info on this? ANy idea HOw much it might cost????

(((((( I recenlty purchased a 4x4 94 toytoa single cab pickup with manual locking hubs. The last time the previous owner used the 4x4 he locked the hubs and Quickly turned on the 4x4 without letting the hubs engage. I lifted the truck completly off the ground and noticed the only the right wheel spins. The left wheel doesn't spin but the part before that does. Thiers also a light clanking sound when the 4x4 is on. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT MIGHT BE WRONG ? HOW MUCH IT MIGHT COST ? ANYTHING ???? ))))

it might be a CV issue.. that would explain why only the right wheel spins... check your CVs

OK - Let me see if I get this right ('cuz it sounds just like a problem I had recently)

no sound in 2WD with the hubs unlocked
Sound in 2WD with the hubs locked
no sound in 4WD with the hubs locked

If that's true, what it was in my case was a dry spindle bushing. "Toyota MDT tech" described a tool you could build to lube them, or pull the CV and do it (that's what I ended up doing).

What kind of hubs? (AISIN - red dial, Warn - gold dial, Superwinch - blue dial)

If the hub is broken your sound makes sense. With the hub not engagted, everything is normal. You lock the hub in 2wd and suddenly there's parts inside the hub that try to grab the cv axle, but it makes all the sounds since it's broken. In 4wd, the sound goes away because the cv axle is turning with the hub.
