Alternator problem... (H.O. Advise)

So i've been having some alternator issues in my truck recently, It was actually causing my amp to shut off, also the lights would dim when i turned on the turn signals and a few other issues. So i tested it with the Midtronics tester at school today and seems to be having a ripple problem (its a problem with one of diodes)...

i searched around and found a few different things available, including the MR2 swap, which is what i'm leaning towards right now, looks simple enought. I can get a reman probably for like 150ish... (maybe there is something better, i read about a GM swap?? or are there other HO alternators out there for us???

what are your guys thoughts???

Ummm - dude - give people some time to chime in!

I recently had mine rebuilt by Boyles Future Tech in CA. They did an AWESOME job. Looks brand new, bolted right up, and they send you a "certification" of what it does at various RPM. Mine makes almost 40A right off idle, maxing out at 130A. Not bad for ~$100 including shipping!

I told them i wanted the most power at low RPM's, even if it meant sacrificing max output, and they tried several setups to find which one did the most at low RPM's.

Oh - BTW, they tested it "before" too. It only did 20A at idle and 60A max, so it's quite understandable that you're running out of juice with the lights and heater on and the system slamming. That's probably what damaged the alt in the first place. I would HIGHLY recommend you invest in a large capacitor for the system to kinda smooth out that electrical demand.

Significant upgrades will mean that you need to add a thicker (smaller gauge) alternator wire. It's easy to smoke the alternator wires, especially on the older trucks with aged wiring.

thanks for the info tc

the mr2 swap requires an extended lower alt bracket (they recomend buying anoother factory one for like 15 and cutting it and welding it to your existing one) and is almost plug and play and its about 100-110 amps
