Tire recs?

All

Starting to look for new tires for my '92 Xcab 4wd, now that I've put in new suspension, etc. Now call me crazy, but I have a fondness for my old stock rims (15 x 7.5 ish). How big can I go? Any brand recs -- run Dunlops now, but not too happy with crappy weather traction...

Thanks!

BFG!
I think with a 7.5 inch rim you can go about 10.5 inch wide for tires. BFG recomends 8" or wider wheels for tires wider than 10.5 inches.

tires

I am running stock size Dunlop radial rovers. Just put in an Old Man Emu kit, so about 2-3 inches of lift...

a ton of people on here will recomend either bfg at's or bfg mt's. What gearing and trans do you have? how much are you willing to deal with powerloss, and how big do you want to go? you should be able to fit skinny 33's with no rubbing, but there will be a definate powerloss

I would not go any taller than a 33" without regearing. You will never get ANY power. 33's you are gonna lose some, but nothing compare dto what you'll lose if you go bigger.

I would say BFG AT's or even BFG MT's in a 33X10.50

That's what I will be going with when I get new tires. What trans do you have and what gearing? If you have a manual I wouldn't go much more than 31s with 4.10s. If you have 4.56s that is the perfect gear for 31s but you should be ok with 33s. 4.88s is the proper gear for 33s.

How do you like the OME kit so far?

33x10.50 on the stock rims will be great!

BFG A/T, M/T, some Super Swampers, and the Dunlop Radial Rover RVXT are the only tires available in that size.

I would highly recommend regearing to 4.88 if you're going to run 33's. Of the three combos (31's with 4.56, 33's with 4.56, 33's with 4.88) it's the best by far.

Stock rims are 7" (or 6") wide, and the 33x10.50 fits fine on either:

Thanks for the info. I have the original transmission and gearing -- V6 wimpy 3 liter, with automatic trannie. Don't want to loose too much power and given the recent dough spent during rebuild not gonna replace diff any time soon. PLus, I have to do a fair amount of highway driving in the crazy northeast for work, dodging semis, etc, in between getting off road.

How would the sizes correlate to sizes on the aspect ratio system (I know, get off my lazy ass and figure it out myself!)

are you asking about metric sizes like 235 75r15, etc? Basically after you get to 31's a lot of manufacturers put the measurement in inches on them instead of metric. if you search 'tire size calculator' on google you'll find plenty of size calculators to compare tires of different sizes, metric, and english.

If you have an auto with stock gearing you're better off staying away from 33's

255/85-16 is about the same as 33x10.50-15

Most 15" rim sizes are in "English", 16" in Metric

Thanks all! Think I'll get some 31 or 32 x 10.5 x 15, either BFG or Firestone, favoring the latter.

check out the nitto terragrappler, cheaper than the BFG and gets REALLY good reviews on this board. in fact, as soon as i can fork over some $$, ill be switching from the BFG MT's to the Nitto Terragrapplers. this doesnt take into account ill have another set of wheels wrapped in some swampers though! i do alot of highway driving and back and forth to school and home, so i dont use the MT enough to justify keeping it on there full time
