Does the 16" wheel option brake caliper take a banjo or a flare?

Hey there everyone, did quite a bit of research on this for my Tacoma, but some info from the 4runner guys would be a bunch of help!

So I'm planning to do a Tundra brake upgrade using the 13we 199mm calipers. The thing is, these take a flare nut (or whatever the metal brake line is connected by). If I can't do the tundra, I plan on doing the 4 runner brakes. The Tacoma takes a banjo bolt to connect the front brake lines onto the caliper.

So my question is that are there any 99+ 4 runners calipers take a banjo bolt? Here is a writeup where the 16" wheel option 4 runner calipers where bolted right onto the tacoma.

http://www.customtacos.com/forum/showthread.php?t=32139

I thought he had connected the banjo to the flare nut connection, but after talking to him he said that the 4 runner caliper had taken a banjo nut. Can someone confirm this for me? If so, I wont be able to do a tundra brake upgrade unless I buy a special brake line, and I'll have to find the exact 4 runner caliper that takes a banjo bolt to connect it to my tacoma. =\

My 4Runner is a flare on the hard line into the caliper.

Mine was a flare on a hard line also, but I wouldn't think it would be difficult to swap the flare for a banjo line. A local brake shop could build you a line for a few dollars. I had to do this for a dodge dart caliper a few years ago, he made me a 4 inch tube with a banjo on one end and a flare fitting on the other. You can do this with either a metal brake tube or a short section of flexible brake line.

That is a great idea, and if things don't go well I'll be sure to do that.

So does ANYONE have a 99+ 4 Runner with a banjo bolt connection into the caliper? As far as I know from the research I did, they didn't make it that way, and that guy bolted a Banjo bolt into the flare hole (I'm hopeing it was that easy anyways).

My 16" calipers had a flare connection.

I swapped out for Tacoma stainless steel lines.

I NOW have a banjo fitting which connects the brake lines to the caliper.

I had to go to a brake shop, they had the banjo bolts that fit perfect.

It will work if your tacoma has Banjo fittings, just get the banjo bolts from your Tacoma calipers or buy some from a good auto-parts store.

Just convert it somewhere upstream. A flaring tool set is not too expensive if you need to cut the existing line back. The I am certain you can adapt these somehow.

You want S13WE (not 13WE....no such casting) for calipers.

To my knowledge, all 3rd gen 4Runner front calipers take a standard flared end (as do all 01-03 Tundras). So if the guy that did that upgrade got those calipers off a 4Runner, then he must have just bolted the banjo fitting to the flare fitting hole. It should work as long as there is clearance for the line to lay flat and a machined surface for the fitting's washer to sit against. The other option as many have mentioned is just to go to a brake shop and get a custom line made (this would be the preferred aproach and not likely to be very expensive) that converts the end.

Flared nut here as well. However when I bought my extended lines I was made to go double check for a banjo fitting as the manufacturer claimed to have run into banjo nuts on 3rd gens.

flare here too. banjo's only came on tacoma's (and perhaps smaller brake runners?) i believe since all the SS lines ive seen for tacomas have been banjo fittings. same goes with the haynes manual (taco shows banjo, 4runner shows flare).

afaik, most if not all runners/4X toyota have used the flare fitting, 'cept tacoma. could be wrong but thats what i've found.

the tundra calipers use flares.

Thanks for all the replies, I didn't think they made 4 runners with Banjo brake lines ether. I'm going to bite the bullet and buy the calipers later on tonight and fit them tomarrow and let everyone know how it goes. Hopefully, they do use the same size flare/banjo. 10mm x 1.0 thread for the 4 runner sounds about right for the banjo bolt on the tacoma also, but who knows. How that guy made it fit, I do not know, but I've read another account that said special brake lines had to be made =\.

It Works! Just got done installing the 199mm s13we calipers and rotors onto my tacoma. The flare connection on the caliper does accept the Banjo bolt, but you have to drill down the center of the bolt. The brakes are many times better then stock tacomas!

I'll have a write-up posted later on tonight!

Great work, Im thinking of doing this mod...Can't wait for the writeup. If I can ask, how much money did you end up spending on the rotors and calipers?

Heres the un-official write up. Seems like you yotatech people have a very specific way of doing write ups . I'll submit it when I get it all into the right format.
