85 4runner 22re issues low power

Bought the 4runner 6 months ago and thought maybe the timing was just off because its under powered. Starts and runs just has no power after 3 or 4k rpm. Throwing a code 12 for knock sensor/timing. (replaced the sensor)

Only other issues are an exhaust leak and changed the oil which immediately turned black and has a fuel like odor.

Idles great and doesnt have any knocking or out of ordinary sounds. Does blow white smoke when revving in neutral past 4k rpm.

Any advice would be appreciated. Have not driven it more than 2 miles since purchased and would really like to be able to enjoy it.

Im sitting on a 5vz and waiting to swap once funds and time allows but it may be another 6 months before that will happen.

For starters tell us what you working with. We are scattered around the world and cant be in front of your rig. So you have to give us as much information as possible. Year, motor, trans, miles, mods, etc.

You love being that guy huh?

First put us in front of your rig. We may be 1,000's of miles from you. Pictures of your engine compartment may help as well. Once again we cant see your rig so the more information you give us the easier it is to help.

So for starters list your rig.
Example:
85 4runner SR5
22re, engnbldr head w/268 cam, NWOR header w/high flow cat & 2 1/4" cat back. W56A trans w/marlin crawler 1,200 clutch. 4:10 gears 31x10.5 BFG Mall Terrains. Etc.

Who did the swap? If not you do you know the history of the engine and rig? Did you do anything routine, or otherwise, and then symptoms started?
It may seem like non related but sometimes when problem starts to get figured out random stuff is related.

I don't know that motor well but, I am about to learn it. I think I am going to end up rebuilding my wife's motor. The junkyard motor we just swapped has a bad bottom end knock. So looks like thats going back and I am going to just rebuild hers.

Well I was going to try and help. But if you want to try and needle people because you didn't give us what we needed to help you you can wait for someone else.

If you go to the newbie stickies and watch the everyone should watch this video you would probably fair better at getting help. Or just pay a shop $80/hr to fix it for you.

Peak torque 2500-3000, sharp drop off at 4000..

You've likely got stuck or broken ring, check compression and run leak test..

Does it still throw codes?

If your leak is upstream of the oxygen sensor that needs repaired or the system doesn't work as designed.

When computer sees a knock sensor signal it retards the timing, engine will be sluggish.

finally found time to mess with it and then it wouldnt start. Redid all the grounds and battery terminals, started right up.
from front to back
1- 162
2- 160
3- 160
4- 152the #4 plug also had a little oil on it. I was expecting that one to be off some.

Also after the compression test I realized there was not a pcv valve installed on the valve cover and the port on the intake manifold has been plugged.

Going to find a valve hopefully today.

The compression numbers are fine and a pcv valve wont help what you’ve described. Gotta look elsewhere.

Fixed the exhaust leak and changed the plugs. Noticeable difference in power and now the check engine light stays off after 4k rpm. But I still dont think it has enough power to drive around on a regular basis.

Also has slightly more noticeable white/ blackish smoke coming out tail pipe when revved.

Noticed white smoke coming from either the head gasket or exhaust manifold. Not sure which because its only coming from that side of the engine.
the last bolt (closest to the firewall) of the manifold was loose and found it was stripped. So its hard to tell exactly where the smoke is coming from.

The exhaust leak and fuel in the oil are related. Your oxygen sensor doesn't get the full exhaust profile so commands more fuel, this excess fuel is washing the oil from the piston rings and cylinder walls. It's very bad to continue revving it under these conditions it can ruin the engine block very quickly.

Pull the manifold off, retap the hole (Carefully!) And put new studs and gaskets.
