Hey guys,

My 1987 4Runner Turbo is throwing a 6-1 code.

Looking it up it says it is the number 2 speed sensor.

Currently it drives good after I warm it up but on occasion when putting the trans into D or R, it almost feels like there is not enough trans fluid.

Does this sound like it could be more than a speed sensor?

How many miles? These transmissions do not last forever. And due to the combo nature they are not cheap to overhaul. I think it weighs in at 900 pounds,

 

Code 61 means a fault in the Speed Sensor No. 2 circuit has been found. This could be due to bad wiring (short, corrosion, broken wire), bad or corroded connectors, the computer itself is bad (not likely, but possible), or the Speed Sensor No. 2 itself could be faulty.

I don't have any experience working on 4WD automatics with ECT computers so I don't know if this code will cause the transmission to act like it is or not. It is possible the ECT computer is receiving bad signals from the Speed Sensor No. 2 circuit and cannot shift properly.

With the age of these transmissions and possibly high miles without proper maintenance, you could very well have more problems than a Speed Sensor circuit problem, however, I would start the diagnosis by tracking down the problem to this code first, since we know the computer does not like the signal it is (or isn't) receiving.

My rig has 235,000 miles and has been maintained very well....at least as far as engine and drive train. .
