Somebody will get a kick out of this so I'll post the pic's of a couple wires I should have replaced the day I purchased the truck. The top one is a 10 gauge ground wire that goes from the cylinder head to the firewall. There was also a 10 gauge wire from the battery to the fenderwell so I let it slide thinking it probably had enough ground wires and the broken wire wasn't doing any harm... wrong

The lower one is the failure someone had spliced into the power wire that goes to the fuse box right next to the battery. I was suspect of this all along because the factory wire coming out of that box looked to be about 8 gauge and the wire they had spliced in looked to be 10 gauge.

I first replaced that ground strap with an 8 gauge wire I had laying around. Then I examined that fuse box wire closer and decided that amount of fail would never do. I decided I wanted to keep the white coloring all the way to the battery so I hopped in the truck for a store run. The truck wouldn't start and the dash lights weren't coming on at all. Power problem. A test light proved the power wire splice a previous owner made was on it's last leg and when I disturbed it I had messed up the connection. Now it wasn't allowing enough power through.

With both wires replaced and the codes once again cleared I let it warm up and drove it a little. When I got back I checked the codes and found that code 43 was gone.
When warm the engine now starts in about 1-2 revolutions.

However I now have a Code 42 to take it's place. But that is the only code.
After searching around I see it's a Speed Sensor Fault?

I read it could be from the sensor in the speedometer if the gauge isn't working. - My speedometer is working and I've never seen it do anything other than function normally.- I do not have a trip odometer if it matters.
It could be a problem in the auto trans sensor? I have a 5 spd manual trans.

Is there still a sensor in the manual trans that I need to check... and can I get to it?

I've read that fault could make the engine lose power and almost die for no reason and it has done that for sure!
I also read that it could shut the cruise control off for no reason, that has also happened.

Does this sound more like it's a sensor problem in the trans or in the speedo?

The speed sensor is EITHER in the back end of the transfer case (electronic speedometer) OR inside the combo meter (cable speedometer). I haven't been able to figure out when Toyota went from cable to electronic; it's easier for you to just look underneath to see if you can find a speedo cable coming out of the back (right) of the transfer case.

If you have the cable speedometer, the speedometer and odometer aren't affected by failure of VSS1, but the ECU is.

Before you go much farther, pull the EFI fuse for 10 seconds to see if you're actually looking at a a stored code. (You can disconnect the battery too, but that knocks out fuel trim, radio stations, ...)

I knew I could do both to clear the codes but this is my first time with a computer in a car. I had been removing the battery cable to clear the codes and losing all the settings it was trying to establish.
Thank you for mentioning that! I guess I'll have to keep a paper clip in the ash tray for code checking.

As you suggested I cleared the codes again by pulling the FI fuse for a few minutes and went for a drive, code 42 came back so it is an existing problem.
I gave a QUICK look under the truck and right under the passengers seat what looks like a speedometer cable is coming out, but I did't look any further than that because of the rain and water puddles.
I wish it would stop raining
