G'day mates.
So my 4Runner had some issues with the heat blowing out and given my tim the toolman uncle's short patience I have a control assembly issue. We were working the cables under the hood at the control valve and when he went to work them inside one of the arms all of sudden had no resistance. So I thought oh no the cable must have come off. So using Terry87's amazing build with taking the dash apart, I got my control assembly out. And the cable being off the arm wasn't my problem. My arm where the mechanism attaches to the adjustment arms there are plastic clips that hold the two together. I am having the hardest time finding these clips. I went to my dealership and they didnt have them listed for sale. Lists of parts and then the whole assembly but not just the clips. Any ideas where I could get some?

 

In the photo above, a good clip in its designated spot is right below the cable that is in the white coat.

 

 

I cant see what clip u are talking about.. but when I did my heater core change I broke a plastic piece on that too but was able to make a replacement out of sheet metal and screws. You think its something you can do? Also these parts are going for pretty cheap on ebay for the whole module

Yeah. Saw a few for below $100 but all I need is two little dainty clips. I'll get the laptop and circle that clip in the picture and post that.

I'm not so sure about the sheet metal lol.

Well a trip to the junkyard may yield something.. I personally hate the uncertainty of going ot junkyard, few pointless trips later I just started getting everything off ebay.

hahaha! That's too funny. To be fair I just purchased it. I didn't even notice. Well once I get this heater and air assembly fixed and re-installed they shall be gone. Good enough?

Here's a pic where I circled the clip in red. And JAvenden I circled the area where the cables attach to control arms. Hopefully this will be your issue once you get it out to take a look. This is an easy fix. Just reattach the cables.

And thanks for the ebay link Gevo. I get the idea of what you're saying. I'll also add I don't that one will fit an 86. Looks like the 2nd gen assembly. But i have seen 1st gems. Just don't want to shell out 50-65 $ for the whole thing when I need two lame-o clips.

 

Yeah. I think a junk yarding we-a-go is in my future. But it's 18 degrees and the want to just dwindles when you're not in the shop with the wood burning stove going.

 

I'm not trying to hijack. Just thought while there was a current thread on this topic I'd ask a question. Can a 3rd gen pickup a/c controls work for a 2nd gen pickup?

I'm all for fixing things right, but if it comes down to spending $50+ for a clip, is there something else you could use? I've never disassembled that deep in the controls, but what if you took some large wire and bent it to secure the controls in place? Or improvised with a bolt/washer/nut assembly that would be secure (use two nuts to lock in place) and save some money? Just a thought.

 

So at first i didn't think the arms went to same hole, but they did. This allows them to line up with a hole all the way through. So I put on a bolt with a washer on each side and locked it down with a but. Much better than the flimsy clips imo.

 

All fixed up. Now just to get my oil pressure gauge to work. Ha

 

Hi all, I know this is old but my heater cable is broken and I need to replace it. My question is how do you remove the little white clip that holds the cable in place?

If you are talking about the white clip just below the top green circle, from the bottom side of that clip, those clips are basically like a wedge that goes thru the slots and spreads out and locks the clip and cable into place.

The way that I get that clip loose is to take some small needle nose pliers and on each side of the clip, I squeeze the wedge. You will have two wedges to squeeze. Once you squeeze one, put a little pressure just enough to get the clip to release on that side and do the other one the same way.

Also the black plastic that is formed into the assembly and helps hold the cable, those can break easily from being brittle. Be very gentle with them as once they break it is basically junk after that. I have tried gluing and other things trying to save an assembly and not had much luck.

If the cable end gets bent, same thing. Even trying to straighten it out it will not hold shape and just kink up on you again.
