Ok so since I messed up the front diff I was looking up my gear ratio with the model number on the door sticker. According to the door sticker I have a 3.90 Gear ratio. it also said that The stock tires are 225/75/15. Now for the big kicker. I bought the runner with 54000 miles a few years ago and am the second owner. I have upgraded the wheels and tires and lifted it as well. I don't remember the tires size that was on when i bought it but I do know I had 16in Toyota rims. I also know for a fact that 15in rims will not fit on it because wen I lifted t I tried to go with 15in rims to put 35's under it. I borrowed my buddies Tacoma spare with a 15in rim and it kept hitting the calipers. then I borrowed some other 15in rims from other Toyota's and after market brands and none would fit. So needless to say I'm not sure that the sticker is correct, anyone have any Idea?

 

Yeah, there is inconsistencies with the door jam stickers... apparently a lot of people have this problem. The only real way to check your ratio is to manually turn the driveshaft and watch how many times the tire spins.

 

I have a '93 pickup and my code is NOT correct, don't trust it, I upgraded to 31" BFG A/T's and now my speedo is dead-on, so that means it was incorrect before with the smaller stock size tires (don't recall off the top of my head what size) and also I have NO driving issues or engine lugging problems.

I look at it this way, if the only thing I have to bitch about my truck is some bad info on my door sticker.......thats awesome!

 

Yep--same thing here--wrong door jam sticker--Inchworm gear has a gear ratio decoder--check it out and trust them--chances are you have 4.10's

 

i would say this is the cheapest and quickest method other than the door sticker which is obviously a problem

depending on the carrier you may have to spin a tire 2 times. it's really easy to do though. mark the top of your tire, mark the top of your driveshaft/flange, put vehicle in neutral on a flat surface where it won't run away from you and push the vehicle so the tire makes 1 (or 2) complete revolutions, and count the flange revolutions at the same time.

alternatively, you can pull the diff and count the gears. but it's not fun

 

well that gives me hope. cause if the stupid thing has 3.90's then I'm regearing, but if it has 4.10 ill just keep them the same cause I have the supercharger.

 

You may have already said this, but is your truck 2WD or 4WD? Assuming it's 4WD, I bet you have 4.10s.

285/75s rob a 4Runner w/ 4.10s of pwr and mpgs as it is...I cannot imagine what 3.90s would feel like w/ 285s.

 

mine door jam sticker was changed when the previous owner repainted my truck and i dont think anything but the tire pressure is correct on it! LOL

 

I'm almost completly positive 3.4L 4x4's without the E-locker all came with 4.10 gears if it has the E-locker you either have 4.10's or 4.30's

 

It is official I just did the tire rotation thing, and It has 4.10's like I thought. the sticker is crap. it did rob power when I went to 315's. but its supercharged now.

 

The standard tire size on the SR5 4x4's was 225/75R15, hence the door jam sticker. But the 265/70R16 tires, with 16" wheels and bigger brake rotors were a very popular option.

In fact, I've never seen a 3rd gen SR5 4x4, that didn't come with the optional 16" wheels and tires.

 

How do you know if you have 4.10's or 4.30's. Isnt it going to be a very minor amount doing it by rolling the tire? Thats something like 2/10's difference right? Can you see that in the test procedure?

 

If your 4Runner came stock w/ a rear e-locker, then you got the 4.30s.

Don't think non elocked 4Runner came w/ 4.30s...someone correct me if I'm wrong.

 

I jacked up one side an marked the tire then marked th drive shaft. and because i have an ARB i could do this. I had my buddy turn the tire 20 full revolutions, and i laid underneath and counted the rotations of the drive shaft. i got 41 exact revolutions, then divided it by 10 and that is 4.10...

 

Just FYI... I have a 2002 4Runner non-elocked with 4.30s.

4.10s will give you 41 rotations of the driveshaft for 20 rotations of 1 rear tire, while 4.30s will give you 43 rotations of the driveshaft for 20 rotations of 1 rear tire. It's quite obvious, really.

That might be true if the 4Runner has an auto tranny.

My '97 SR5 4x4 V6 has the factory e-locker rear diff, and 4.10 gears. But it's also 5-speed manual trans.
