web page help
I need a little bit of help setting up a website. What I am looking for is a way to have some sort of a digital drop box where I can upload files and have them accessible from the web. Is there something with a nice web installer that would get this going for me. I am using gallery at www.gallery.menalto.com for pics and torrentflux from www.torrentflux.com. Help with this would be great and I will be sure and share the site when its up and running.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you can do what you want via FTP. Just have your server space set up and connect to the account with an FTP client or SSH. If you use a client such as FTP Wanderer: http://www.pablosoftwaresolutions.co..._wanderer.html
That is, of course, assuming you already have some web space set up on a server somewhere. If you have an ISP, they usually provide space. However, most of 'em are kinda finnicky about using FTP, and don't like you to be able to see your root directory from a web browser.

I am going to be serving this myself so thats not really a problem. I was hoping for something more like this http://homepage.mac.com/darcip/FileSharing8.html. I know how to go about setting up an ftp server and accessing ftp sites and such. I was looking for a bit more elegant of a solution. thanks for the help though.

That site you posted a link to is just a basic web page that links to the files being downloaded. It doesn't get changed unless the person who wrote the page changes it themselves, I think. If there's a way to drag and drop into a website, wow, do tell!

You could setup a FTP pc/server at home and just use IE browser to get to files and its like windows explorer and you drag and drop files into folders, not sure if thats what your looking for I use it to move files from anywere on the internet to my home server and pickup files too when needed.

Creating accounts gets to be a bigger deal... user names, passwords, security, quotas (if you want), etc. Now your probably getting to where you'll have to buy a boxed solution or pay someone to code something for you.

Might be what your looking for. I don't know if it has all the features you want. Live updates and stuff.

I too have been looking for a simply way club members can add photos to their photo section, without me having to do a thing.
Im playing with Macromedia Dreamweaver and Fireworks right now, the two combined has a feature that will create a photo page, and it automatically creates thumbnails and pages for you. Im trying to alter the code, so that it looks for new files in the upload directory and automatically adds the images to the photo page. NO SUCH LUCK YET...but getting there.
The problem is Fireworks renames the files each time it index's them so I end up with files called pic1_jpg.jpg when I re-index it that file gets renamed again to pic1_jpg_jpg.jpg and so on.... It becomes a real mess.
Heres an example of a Dreamweaver/Fireworks Photo Page. (All you do is point Fireworks the the Pictures and it does EVERYTHING for you (Including resizing of images, creating the pages, creating the thumbnails and navigation) http://www.mudrunner.ca/ardbeg_2005/index.htm
Hopefully I get the Java Script code worked out, Ideally Id like to have the club member upload there own Pictures, click a button (a Link to the java script) and have that file/files added to their photo page.

I finally found a solution to my original question about a central place to keep files. WebDAV server. It is an exstension of http that allows for multiple people to access files from the internet. the storage can be mapped just like any othere network drive. The best part is that it is included on the mac mini I am using as a server.
4Hummer, I dont know if you have found a soluton to your photo managment but if you go to gallery.menalto.com they have a great php setup that will do exactly what you want.

Serv-U FTP server is a pretty good tool for setting up an FTP server on your local PC. Using IE from any remote computer will allow for drag & drop.
Setting it up is the painful part... but no more painful than a pinch.
You can try photo bucket... but they also have a limit on how much bandwidth you can use a month
