Think you are good? Fix THIS problem !! (spyware related)

So for months now I have stared at a desktop image that reads " Warning you are in danger, blah blah blah sypware detected, blah blah click here to remove all spyware " and if you click the desktop it takes you to a website for searching, and casnios and blah blah blah just bullÅÅÅÅ.

I have used every credible spyware removal tool I can find.

AdAware
SpyBot
Microsoft Spyware
Mcafee spy delete

just to name a few. All programs have been updated with current definitons and NOTHING will remove this crap from my background.

Ontop of this my browser points to " about:blank " which brings up some more searching crap. I know its something installed on my computer but ive been through every thing and cant find it.

Also, if you right click/properties on the desktop and try to manualy remove this background you cant. The only tabs available at the top are screen saver, and settings. Every thing else is just gone. its like this spyware has altereted the programing of windows itself. Don't ask me where it came from because I have no idea what to tell you. ive NEVER had any problems like this before and Its been there for months now and im kinda tired of it. Im not sure what to do sort of reformating the computer.

Another thing this crap does, if I go to popular websites like Ebay.com, or yahoo.com the page will load, then as soon as its done, it goes right back to that about : blank crap and i cant see the website i went to. I have to go ot it on the laptop. Sucks.

Shut your computer down or "restart" it and then start it in "safe mode" and see if the BS is still evident.

If not, try "defragging" followed by "Scandisk" on "Thorough" (be prepared for this to take some time) and lastly, follow everything up with a "system restoration" to a "point" that you know was before the infection.

It would also be helpful if I knew what OS you're running.

p.s. Something that may provide quicker/easier relief for you would be to click on "Tools" up top on your toolbar, then "Internet Options", then "Delete Files" and check "Delete all offline content", then click "OK".
Again, knowing your OS would be helpful if this does'nt help.

I purchased spysweeper and got rid of mine from it. Its a great program too for keeping out spyware. Also I have zonealarm with popup blocker and yahoo toolbar with popup blocker too. He probably has spyware running in memory which is a task to get rid of. I lucked out by using spysweeper and bringing up windows task manager and checking the running processes and noticing the spyware there and ending process then running spysweeper again. Also check your startup items that run when you startup your computer and make sure there isn't spyware automatically starting up when you boot up to windows. Just go to RUN and type in msconfig and hit enter. go over to the startup tab and uncheck the boxes that are spyware. Sometimes that worked and sometimes it didn't. To get the trial version of spysweeper go to www.webroot.com and download it.

You've got more than spyware problems. It sounds like you have at least one virus. Can you reinstall Windows from scratch?

It would still be really helpful if he told us what his operating system was, kinda like needing to know what sort of engine he had in his 'Runner before being able to give advice on it.

honestly, i'd suggest setting up a remote connection on your desktop, something like RealVNC and allowing one of us spyware guru's to take a crack at it, or let us try one after another, see what we can do for you. other then that, take a crack at following my steps in the pc tips.. might help?

Sounds like a virus, spyware, and a browser hijacking. The best thing to do is reinstall the OS from scratch.

Somtimes you can find some good info on spyware related things in the dslreports.com forums...

Sounds like Active Desktop is enabled along with an HTML page configured as your active desktop content. Right-Click any open space on your desktop and select PROPERTIES. Depending on the OS, the following instructions are different but I'll assume you're running XP.
Click the DESKTOP tab
Click the CUSTOMIZE DESKTOP button
Click the WEB tab
Uncheck (or better yet, delete) all the web content selections
Check LOCK DESKTOP and then OK your way out of all the dialogue boxes. That should fix your desktop problem.

Spwsweepeer is 'da bomb
My son brought over his PC last weekend to game with me,a nd the CPU was stuck in 100% usage when you entered Windows XP.

He had Spysweeper on it, but never used it, and I even installed it on there after I formatted it a few months back.

The spyware came a few free game demos or something.
I was able to get it back by Safemode and running Spysweeper.

Yes, it sounds like a format is in order for you.
How long has it been?
A PC should be formatted at least once a year.
Mine was done a year ago September, and due now, but it is still running about as fast after the last format, so I will put it off until spring or so.

Download Counterspy
http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/index.cfm

Install Counterspy (you get a few days of full trial)
Update Counterspy

Ensure your Anti-Virus program has the latest updates

unplug the network cable,

reboot into safe mode with no networking

Run Counterspy (deep scan),

Run your Anti-virus,

clean as much as possible.

reboot into safe mode again, run both programs again,

clean up, then boot back into normal mode

The only thing I ever had was the coolwebsearch business a while back. I used:
spysweeper
adaware
spybot S&D
hijack this
and TDS 3.
Between all those and some safe mode running and random deleting I got rid of it, haha. Check out a spyware forum, they usually have good advice on this.
