Simple fix, if you left your XP partition in place. Boot dos from a win98 cd. Then type "fdisk /mbr". This will recreate a standard microsoft compatible boot record. Then you type fdisk again and you make you XP partition active. Problem should be solved. Takes about 5 mins if you have a win98 or win95 bootdisk with fdisk on it.

Let me know if you've more problems.

I'm getting the error Primary hard disk drive 1 not found

from the bios it shows the drive....and its info

I've also ran fixmbr C: and fixboot C:....nothing changed the problem

Right now I'm installing windows into a new folder windows2...I gave up on the other harddrive because windows said it couldnt use it anymore....so now I'm just trying to get into windows one more time....install Nero....copy AT LEAST my pictures and prints, then get my mp3's and other files....if i'm lucky it will work....but if things keep going the way they have been I doubt it will work....

gee this sound familiar
I've been using knoppix with limited success.
I did get in working with little trouble. I finnaly got my cf card to work. I can access the net but not my home network. Wireless card and the lan card work fine. Can't friggin print though. Works great on the laptop. Can't get any sound on my desktop to work though, I use digital out on my desktop and the OS doesnt know whaat to do with it.. knoppix is cool becuase you can boot from the cd without loading and remove when done so there is no data loss.

if you trashed your drive you can get the info off with a usb hd box. but the hd in the box and plug it into a windows system and you can get on it

All I have to say is: LOL.

Knew this was going to happen after reading first line of first post.
Buy a LEGO set man, and use the computer with Windows when you need something to get done.

lol....i would take that as an insult but your absolutely right....I'm great with windows, and can get anything accomplished from cracking WEP and pretty much any serial for any program include windows....but I definately rely on windows....

When I first got a computer I was in DOS then moved too Win 3.11....so I know windows inside and out.....but Linux is a new animal and is NOTHING like windows....

My advise to people looking to use Linux is to :

1. Copy everything important you have too an external media source
2. Make a back up of your MBR
3. READ everything you can find on Linux, its nothing like windows, there is a ton of commands that you'll NEED to know.
4. Dont waste your time unless you have a good reason in doing this.
5. Use a seperate machine if possible, they say its as easy as Mac but I can run a Mac with my eyes closed, I found this a lot more difficult.

God speed.....

All in all I had everything running about right but it was slower then windows and I didnt see the point since I couldnt run out of my software that I used daily in it.

I think it would be cool to try out the program on the DVD and boot from it like was mentioned earlier in this thread, but I myself see no reason to really try it.

XP does everything that I ever need to do such as game, listen to online radio, get MP3s, surf the turf, pay bills, graphics editing, ect...

Good luck on getting things fixed.
Perhaps get a dedicated PC setup just for Linux.

Glad you got your files back.
I was ecstatic when I was able to recover all of mine, I would have lost years of work.

there is a couple different ways to do it, the easiest IMO would be with Aircrack....I'd probably use NetStumber to find a network, remember what channel its on then using a prog that comes with aircrack, I believe, its called airodump...it will collect IV's, once you have 300,000 - 500,000 aircrack can crack the password out of it....for 500,000 IV's to be sent in reasonable time there will have to be extremely heavy traffic....I've used it once on a bussiness place and it worked (i didnt venture in, I just wanted to see how well it worked)...I tried to use it at my house and even while I was downloading a movie I could only get about 20,000 IV's....so its pretty pointless to try to crack a residental wireless setup....

If you search yahoo for aircrack a doc should pop-up from cr0.net or something like that, it will explain how it works and how to use it....

Ahh, somebody ported aircrack to Windows. Probably using WildPacket Windows drivers as the base. That's not good for WEP at all. Too many folks know how to use Windows

no chris devine wrote it for windows since the first edition.....its pretty good for WEP, by far the best brute force way to wep crack....too many folks know how to use windows?...what does that matter, works for anyone running wep, windows or not...

One theme I see over and over again in the linux circles is they think you can't hack on a windows box which is BS. Granted its easier to hack on linux after the system is set since there are more tools available for this on linux, of course but saying it can't be done or done as well is follish to say. With my experiance with both, I know windows a hell of alot better of course is they both send out the exact commands over a network. That's what TCP/IP html/xml RING, and a dozen other protocols are there for. the differance being the file structure between mshome and samba<-- once I figured this out I could do anything I wanted to either system from either system . and thats why Linux/windows and Mac work together on a network.

Yeah, and I had Linux up and running. I had the sound card working, and everything else EXCEPT my wireless card. I was well on my way to figuring it out when it hit me, why in the world am I doing this?...I mean I PAID for windows, why in the world would I want to use something free since I already paid for something. And to learn to do things I could do with a double click from with in windows wasnt worth it too me.....Maybe one day I play with it some more but I dont really see a reason too....

Why in the world I formatted it without fixing my mbr I dunno, sometimes I dont think before I act I guess.....
