Is it possible to block access to certain websites?

I have a roommate who is obsessed with myspace and classmates. Since their computer is a clunker they choose to always use mine. I want to fix the glitch as they would say on office space and let this problem work it's self out naturally

Can I block certain sites with Windows XP

Just put a log on user password on your computer and tell him to stay off your computer. If that doesn't work...introduce his arse to your feet.

webroot has software called childsafe that will fufill your needs..its like $50 or something though.

Windows vista has these features built in..It will even only allow your kid to access the computer at times that you say its ok.

I am more evil than the rest of you. Add a 127.0.0.1 entry in the windows host file for classmates.com and reunion.com and myspace.com. When you need those sites just place a remark statement before the host entry.

The host file is located under c:\windows\system32\driver\etc

Verify your local area connection / internet protocol / properties / advanced / WINS -- check your Enable LMHOSTS file box

New entries should look like:

127.0.0.1 classmates.com
127.0.0.1 reunion.com
127.0.0.1 myspace.com

when You need them then...

# 127.0.0.1 classmates.com
# 127.0.0.1 reunion.com
# 127.0.0.1 myspace.com

You can use word to edit the host file. Create a short cut and post it on the desktop.

also, don't forget to restart your DNS client after changing your HOSTS file.

Start -> Run -> type "services.msc", find DNS client, restart.

Voila!

With Windows XP you do NOT need to restart anything.
Just save and close the world or notepad.

It's that easy.

I like the boot pw. But I also know on dells at least. You can remove a jumper switch and bypass the boot pw.

screen saver and boot are easy to do though. Will stop most people.

Are you editing the LMHost file? If so, please do not.
Edit the host file.

DNS service isn't impacted by changing the host file.
