outlook, word, and CSS

My office uses MS Outlook (Exchange) to send bulk e-mails. We use word though outlook so we can do mail merges to personalize the e-mails before they go out. Recently, we've been talking about putting together a newsletter-like e-mail, with HTML/CSS embedded in the e-mail.

In theory, this is fine, however Word thinks to much and screws with the code, particularly the CSS. Is there a way to tell Word to stop thinking/interpreting the code? It's very frustrating.
