Kev, I set it up when I first got it.
Here is some reading from CNet on 911.
http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-9238_7-...ml?tag=nl.e404

Does not bother me the least if it works or not, as I have many neighbors I can use a land line phone if needed.
Plus when I do get back to getting a cell phone, no worries.
The pluses of Vonage over my lnad line far outweigh the rest.
Free long distance and so many other things.

rwmorrison, as mentioned earlier, talking on Vonage and gaming at the same time I saw no difference.
You can also select your bandwidth priority from your settings on your account page.
I just leave it the way they had it, and it works great.

I can be downloading files too from the 'Net and talking, no problemo here.

Another stupid question(s) perhaps. Can the phone work while the PC is off? What if my PC totally craps out on me for some reason. Will I still be able to use the phone?

No PC required.
All you need is a cable/DSL modem, and the router from them.

As long as your 'Net connection is working, you have service.

Corey,

Did you transfer your old landline phone number to your Vonage account?

Vonage works great over my Internet cable connection, and way cheaper.
I can call anywhere in the US for free, no long distance charges.
Call forwarding, caller ID, 3 way calling, voicemail, ect.

The quality of talk is on par with my old land line, and people I talk to actually sound louder, have to turn the phone down some.

The voicemail is cool.
I can access it via my telephone, their web site, from another telephone, ect.
Also I get an email when someone has left me voicemail, and I also opted on the settings page to have the WAV file delivered to my inbox, pretty cool.

Gamed the other night with member Drew, and while playing Battlefield 2 I was talking also on Vonage, and both worked great with no bandwidth issues.

I am really happy with Vonage.
Cheaper, more features, and works great.

Gonna miss my old number though, I was not able to transfer it over to Vonage.
Some can do that, but the timing was not right for me to do so.

Comcast my ISP is coming out also with VOIP, but it will be more money from what I hear than Vonage.
They should be up and running within a few months.

Thanks to Jim (jrallan26) for turning me onto this.

Jonathan, he said he couldn't transfer his old number.

I would have already ordered Vonage, but I noticed they want you to give your existing phone number even if you pick the option to sign up for a new number. Since I had my phone disconnected when I moved I cant do this, and it is a required field. I guess I will have to call them.

Time Warner cable recently added digital phone service to their line up and I just switch over to the service, keeping my old number.

I signed up yesterday. I had to call them since their online application required my current number, and I don't have one. I had to call about 5 times because no one would answer the phone. I finally got someone and as I figured, he was from India. His English was pretty good, however, but it took longer since he had to spell things out.

Unfortunately, my area code will be long distance for this area, but it won't be a big deal, since all my friends and family are long distance anyway.

Been on vonage for about 5 months. I will never go back to land line. I just got the 500 minutes for $15 a month. I've NEVER come close to using all those minutes. If I did go over it's a whopping 3.9 cents a minute. I can basically talk for 750 minutes before I hit the $25 for unlimited. That's something to consider if you arent a big talker or are a big cell phone user like myself - 1 for work and 1 for personal. My biggest month for vonage was a whopping 235 minutes. Anyway, Vonage is grrrreat!

For those out in Phoenix. I hooked up with cable america's bottom line broadband - a mere 256k. It's plenty of juice to surf and vonage. The vonage router can be set to reserve 180k or something like that for high quality calls. The rest of your bandwith is used for surfing. I would advise to bump up the speed if you are a big gammer though. Anyway...back to Cable America. I pay a whopping $26 for the internet access. I told them I didnt want cable TV...well guess what, you cant have internet without TV. I told them i didnt want to pay for the cable TV...they wanted my business...there is no charge. So my grand total is $42 for expanded cable TV, internet, and phone. It doesnt get much sweeter than that. Occasionally the internet does go down...but I could care less since Im saving at least $50 a month --> $600 a year! I'll take the disaster/robbed risk after looking at those savings. Vonage did just hookup with a home alarm company...I havent investigated it, but I bet the $50 in savings a month would cover it. Probably get a home insurrance break as a result...

Pretty sweet deal. I'm paying $90 plus tax with Optimum cable, internet and voice. This is with the $30 a month/each promotion for 1 year. After the one year, I'll switch to Vonage...

Love it, it rocks.
Had a little trouble last week talking on it, the other party could not hear me, but I could hear them.

It was my ISP, Comcast.
Surfing also was pretty slow, but it came back to full speed a few hours later.
Comcast could have been working on the nodes or something.

Other than that, it is great.

Corey, I received my router today and have a question(s) maybe you can help me with. I hooked the router up according to the instructions. I plugged only one phone in the router to begin with and it worked fine. I did not use the Setup Wizard CD, since everything works-is it necessary? I have the Linksys RT31P2 router. I tested the phone and called out with it and everything works great. I then plugged in a second phone into the router and all I get is a busy signal for the second line. I've swapped phones too. Do you know if I need to do something else-I rebooted the modem and router with no success.

I wonder if the second phone connection on the router is bad. Just thought I would run that by you since you seem to know this stuff.

Hi Nic, I have never hooked up a 2nd phone to mine.
You might call them up or drop them an email, as they get back to you quick via email.

I do know that a few weeks back when my phone I had plugged in got fried, (nothing to do with Vonage) I plugged in a different phone and put it on the other port.
As soon as I pushed talk, I heard a womans voice in a recording that said the phone was pluuged into the wrong port.
I switched ports and all was well after that.

I did not use any software when I hooked it up.
All went well.

I also have the router configured to open a few ports I need in case I am hosting an online game from my PC.
Linksys makes it very easy to do port forwarding.

I sent them an e-mail. I really didn't feel like waiting on the line for a live person anyway. I unhooked the first line to see if I would get the same message as you, but it still gave me a busy tone. It's no big deal really. I can live with just one working. I would like to get a phone that has two handsets anyway. My crappy cordless phone is getting old and the display is almost unreadable.

I would be willing to bet the modem is defective. I can never buy electronics without something being broken or not working the first time.

Thanks for the help.

I made two long calls to my folks and a friend, and the Vonage was flawless. I made the first call with an old corded phone hooked up and the volume was noticeably loud. It would have helped to have a volume control. I plugged up my cordless phone for the second call and it was perfect on the volume. The phone went dead at one point, but it turned out that my friends phone battery went dead.

So far, I'm happy with it.

Cool, glad it is working out for you.
The only thing we need to be concered about is a blackout, or if our ISPs go down.

But that is what cell phones are for right

The second phone jack is for a second line. It wont work unless you puchased a seocnd line for $5. Just put a splitter into the first phone jack and plug whatever you want into it. I've got 3 things plugged into mine - fax, corded phone, cordless phone system.

Hey thanks. Afterwards I started thinking about that and I wondered if that was perhaps what it was for, but I couldn't find anything specifically stating that. Thanks for confirming that.

Vonage never responded to my e-mail either. Hopefully, I won't have to deal with their customer service that much or at all.

I think I'm gonna get Vonage this Friday. How immediate is the hook up? Do you have to pay the first bill up front? Are there any other hidden charges? Do you know how you can wire it to your existing home wiring? I've read about people doing this, but I can't find any solid diagrams.

DATA, I'm supposed to get the Vonage box today. Got it just as a test run. If it works ok maybe it will replace the normal line. First bill is $60.

$15 for first month 500 minute plan, $30 setup fee, $10 shipping, and the rest some sort of taxes. They ship DHL ground from Ohio.

Corey is a wanker for not mentioning that there is a referral discount. I signed up at full $60 price. I can send you a referral, there is a discount for both the referrer (moi) and the referee(?), for you in other words. If you private me your email I can send a referral, you’ll get 15$ off for 500 minute plan, or 25$ for unlimited.
