I wouldn't mind something Centrino-ish in my Powerbook. NICE battery life.

ibm weren't able to produce fast enough chips...compared to intel.(supposedly) If apple does release a new powerbook before the intel books are released(doubtful) they will probably be dual core G4's.

Dibble: Yes, the plug-in works flawlessly with Tiger. I can send/recieve using my free hotmail account with no issues. Here's the link:

Well it still says both will be offered. I wonder if that means only a G4 in the future or move up to a G5?

I'm not sure the "both" option will last long...just enough for the transition. Software has to be ported to Intel, etc... But the G5 powerbook if definately not going to happen. Right now, the fastest G4 is the 1.67, no? I bet it gets a speed bump and then gets replaced.

Ahh the joys of technology.

i hope you bought the applecare. i sell/service apples and dells in the university bookstore here at mizzou, and let me tell you, i see a ton of PB's in here to be serviced. despite what apple will tell you, get a raised laptop stand that will allow it to ventilate as well, those suckers still get rather hot.

did you get your free ipod mini?

You have a 1 year warranty, so you have a year to buy Applecare. I HIGHLY suggest that you do it, not so much for tech support but for repairs. College is TOUGH on laptops. When I dropped mine, it was from the bed in my dorm to the floor. Oops.

i also suggest you get applecare. Problems always arise as soon as the warranty expires.

Ive got a question. I should have antivirus, to protect me and the other people that have windows or macs. I also want backup software. I found this, has all that and a firewall program. (if link doesnt work, the program is called 'Internet Security Barrier X - Backup Edition') I know a lot of apple users do not think they need all that, but I just want to be safe, and protect those that I email and send files too. Does it sound like a good deal? Or is the OSX firewall fine, and does OSX have its own backup program? I can get just the virus scan and save some money if the OSX equivelants are fine. For the backup program, I would simply like to copy the files/folders to a seperate hard drive, no tricky compression or passwords, just keeping it simple seems to protect data better. Thanks.

anyone? Doesnt disk management cover backups? Ive also heard you can create automated scripts that could backup. I dont need that much, just copy and paste automatically every night, excluding files that havent changed. How is OSX's firewall?

OSX Tiger has it's own virus scan and the new Safari is pretty good w/ protection options.
You can sync and backup stuff automatically- check out isync and backup stuff at mac.com

No, no it doesn't. There's a free, open source virus program out for OS X.
ClamXav. I personally won't mess with an antivirus program for OS X until it is needed. At least this one is free.

As for backup, a free one is SilverKeeper. It's a nice little program that you can setup to run at scheduled times. If you want the best backup there is, Dantz Retrospect is the only way to go. It's a little pricey, but it's worth it.

to tell the truth, anyone trying to selling antivirus for a mac is like selling bra's for dudes....in a sense

because of the linux/unix based OS, its already a very secure and virus free system, that said, you may consider an antivirus so you don't spread viruses, despite not being vulnerable. some universities will block your mac address if you are spreading viruses.

as for the backup, get an external HD or back up important stuff to the web or on DVDs. HD failure is the #1 problem i see and deal with in apples.

With OSX Tiger espeicaly your never likley to get a virus... or spyware, or popups

its an AMAZING operating system. ilife is great, spotlight is amazing, dashboard is handy

I have a 12" G4 ibook 1.2ghz 512mb ram. Its all I can afford and i LOVE IT for how much i spent i would not be able to get anything near comparable for a windows laptop. Not to mention that ive had this since december without a single issue.
I even spilled on my keyboard and the apple store cleaned it for me. For dropping issues ive droped mine many times onto carpet from as high as 3 feet with no issues.

My ibook is the most expensive thing i own...sigh

isnt there a way to backup using disk utility? I just want something simple, I had dantz retrospect, didnt like it, put all my files in its own encrypted files. Almost couldnt recover my information. Also, how is OSX's firewall? Is it like windows where it asks you to block or authorize every program that tries to connect to you or the internet (Thats the one thing I like about windows, lol)
