I recently discovered a fellow employee using our company computers to look at "Questionable Content" on the internet. Now my boss wants me to try and deny him access to the internet.

I was wondering if any of you know of a free program that will require a password before allowing anyone or any program to access the internet.

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

why not just password protect your computers? have a login ID and PW for each workstation and restrict/allow access as needed.

I do not think there is any free software that has that capability.

The best thing to do IMO is to do the individual user/pw on each computer. There is a setting where you can deny certain programs to be run.

if he does not need ANY access to the interent you can block port 80 on his machine. or just unplug the network cable.

How are you connected to the net? If it's via a router, most of them will allow you block traffic by machine IP or to log the traffic.

He doesn't have a machine of his own, he works in another part of the building. He uses my machine after I go to lunch, or when i'm doing something else and the boss isn't around. So I can't block port 80, and I think he would figure out that a cable is disconnected.

As for individual logins and p/w's, I don't think my boss would go for that. He already hates the fact that he has to hit "enter" when he boots up the machines in the morning, I left the login screen blank at initial start up.

simple solution requiring no password, software, etc:

tell all users of that computer that if they are found surfing porn, they will be fired

paste that onto the monitor too.

low-tech solution for a common problem.

via router...there are configs you could set...but that might block you out from the internet completely

the easyest thing might be just flick the "use proxy setting" on and put in a bous address. it will bounce all the internet traffic back (like the "internet" is down).

its not THAT eays of a setting to stumble oppion by accident trying to "fix" the problem yourself, but if you know were the setting is its fairly quick to flip it back to "normal" operation for yourself.

My boss is a guy that needs me to download images from email attachments...I don't think i'll be able to get him to remember how to get to the right part of the tools menu to change internet settings...He's kinda hopeless...

Easiest way is to just lock windows. If you are wanting to password protect the internet then your boss is going to have to input a password anyways.

if he is using your computer then its best to get username and passwords and lock the computer when you leave. (shortcut: windows key + L) yes, its one more step you have to go through in the morning but its the best soluition. i used to not have passwords on my machines until someone broke into my room while i was out of town and messed wiht my computer causing me to loose a BUNCH of data. ever since then they get locked if i leave. also use "un-crackable" passwords. a mix of UPPER lower numbers (0-9) and special character !@#$%^&* there is easily accessable and free password cracking software. even my password whihc i thought was good (used a mix of upper, lower and numbers) only took 3 days to crack.

get the fingerprint reader so no password is needed to log on, then he wont even be able to use any programs

This isn't as good as the router way, but you can make these changes on his computer to restrict access to certain sites.

Assuming he uses IE, click on Tools | Internet Options | Privacy tab | Sites, and add whatever sites you don't want him visiting to that list. Of course, he can edit it if he figures out what's going on.

The best way is via the router. That way he has no control over it.

I know you don't need it, but if you did have usernames & passwords on the pc's you could set your bosses pc to autologin with his username & password. Easiest way is this sysinternals utility

I have it on my automation PC's so that if they ever crash they restart themselves completely, and I still have my remote access.
