I still haven't got a clan invite. I put all of you on my friendship list. Let me know if the whole clan thing is in swing.

I think it is still going to happen. I accepted a invite today but we still haven't played a clan match.

Not bad at all.

I managed to hit level 8 in Rumble Pit Saturday morning then did a serious backslide to level 7. I think I have played close to 140 Rumble Pit games and won 4.

I don't play much Team based rounds, everytime I do I get stuck with a team of kids that try to kill you and don't care much about the game.

I would like like to get the clan thing going but nobody here seems to be on the same time I am.

I think I'm close to being a 4. Ove the weekend I've actually gotten placed higher than last (!), and also got my first double-digit kills score.

btw... this thing's cool.

Buy an extension for it, or go wireless.

I have an extension. I also have a wireless Logitech controller, what I hate about it is they didn't make it so you can plug in memory cards of LIVE cards, so you have to sit 4 feet from the xbox with the controller to play on LIVE. for Halo2 I've been using the original "fatty" controller, not the controller S which is too small for my hands.

Yeup, it showed up on Friday (two+ weeks to get here from Germany). My tease above was meant to say that I got farther than a level two with 4 kills max to where I wam now 'cause I'm now using a keyboard/mouse.

I still suck - I just suck less.

Yeah, I saw that when I was just checking my stats. I think it's from a game starting then the host bails on the game. Maybe not.

Mark, I was thinking, how do you use all the functions with a mouse/keyboard, i.e. melee attack, zoom, both trigers (with daul guns), jump, reload, switch guns and grab another for dual?

I can give you a "quick-look" now..

You can't use the mouse alone, you gotta have the keyboard around as well. As you may be able to imagine, it can be a little cumbersome to get comfy with a mouse/keyboard combo in the "normal" Xbox setup in a living room. I'm running it kinda' balanced sideways on the couch, with a legal pad as a mouse pad. It's not ideal, but it's working for now.

The little box comes pre-loaded with 8 (10?) setups which are mapped to specific games. Halo 2, Splinter Cell, and some others that I can't think of. These basically remap the keys and buttons for easy access to things in the game. There are also two additional setups - generic and blank - to use for miscellaneous games. You select which setup you want to use with a single press of an F key. For example, F1 is Halo 2.

Any and all of the setups can be modified and written over. The setups are saved in NVRAM so that they're preserved across a power cycle. You have VERY good control over defining keys and buttons. For example, the device lets you do something different with SCROLL_UP and SCROLL_DOWN.

To give you an idea of what to expect, for Halo 2, the keys are defined as:

Code:
Primary Weapon LEFT_BUTTON
Secondary Weapon RIGHT_BUTTON
Weapon Zoom SCROLL_UP
Next Weapon SCROLL_DOWN
Jump SPACE

FWD/BCK/LT/RT W, S, A, D
Melee E
Reload R

LOOK MOUSE X/Y

BACK ("B") BACKSPACE
WHITE CENTER_BUTTON
I'm doing this from memory so I know I'm missing some (or have some confused), but they're all there.

Like I say, you can also reprogram anything you'd like anywhere and it'll be saved. For example, I usually play Half Life with JUMP on the RIGHT_BUTTON, secondary weapon on the SHIFT and CROUCH is the SPACEBAR.

I may do that here, but I'm getting used to this one as it is.

It uses the games' mouse sensivity, and you'll wanna crank that ALL the way up so you can spin around on a dime. You can invert mouse Y from the box, or from the game of course. The mouse dynamics are VERY nice. If you move the mouse slow, the character moves slow. If you move the mouse quick, the character moves right _now_.

There's also a programable "dead zone" stored for _each_ setup. This is where you can define how far you have to move the mouse before the box registers a move. Very nice.

The only weirdness that I've seen is that when you're flying the small jet-car-thing, then it moves sluggish under mouse control. That's not really a problem, but when you get out, you've gotten so used to the sluggish control that you start flailing your guy everywhere! I _think_ this is a feature - in that the jet-car-thing is a bear to keep on track anyway.

There is NO lag with the box. And there's no sense of it being flakey in terms of losing keyhits or setups.

The box has ONE (not two!) socket on it that will accept either a headset adapter or a memory card.

Bottom line... If you're used to FPS games on the PC, then you've come to know the mouse/keyboard way of dealing with this stuff and the console controller drives you nuts. For $30, you can have your sanity back.

If you want one, and don't want to wait the 2 weeks for international shipping (plus it looks like they're out of stock) then they're all over eBay now too...

Oh! one more thing. My comment above about getting an extension is based on this box having a pigtail of only about 6" total. Depending on your setup, you may want an extension cable to get the box closer to where you'll setup your mouse/keyboard.

Hope that helps - I guess that was a bit more than a "quick-look".

Very nice!

I like the "If you move the mouse quick, the character moves right _now_." idea.
I play with the look sensitivity cranked to 6 right now. I just moved it to 6 this weekend from 5. I find as I get better to kick it up a notch, it really helps game play to be able to look faster and control it. When I first got the game I tryed it on 5 and couldn't control Master Cheif at all, he was all over the place, so I went back to default (3). Now I play on 6 and will continue to move it up as I get better at finessing the look toggle. If I stay relaxed and focused on the task I do well. When I get worked up I am all over the place. One other thing I changed this weekend was the melee attack button, it is now the right toggle, where the scope zoom was and the zoom is the "B" button. That helped a lot, I can follow and melee at the same time instead of taking my thumb off to melee.

Yeah... with the controller I started out on "1" (dweeb!), and then moved to 3 and 4 before I moved to the mouse/keyboard.

One other thing about the SmartJoy box is that it supports "n-key rollover" so you can have more than one key held down at once. For example, holding down W, E and wildly spinning the mouse all at the same time is supported.
