This is mainly for a dedicated box that you will not be surfing on, something that you can tuck away some where.

My old PIII 500 is setup this way to share its D drive with all the other PCs on my home network.

 

Step 1: Install iTunes
Step 2: Turn on music sharing

you're done

 

even easier to go into windows explorer and click "share folder" if you are running a dedicated mp3 server.


I have my desktop tied into my houses audio system (2 speakers mounted in the ceiling of every room) and it tied into my living rooms television via s-video.

So I can turn the channel to video 6 and using a wireless mouse I can play all my mp3's through the house. I can also watch movies that I have in the avi or divx formats on the television with good sound, the video through s-video isnt that great though.

 

What I meant in my first post above too was that I do have the D drive shared on the old PC, so it can be accessed from any other PC in the place.

Pretty simple to do, and keeps my main PC from being clogged up with tons of tunes.

 

Here's what I'm planning on doing in the near future due to space issues:

First off, I'm getting a Network Attached Storage (NAS) enclosure like the one here: NAS Enclosure. Only bad thing is it doesn't support NTFS, so no files over 4 gigs. Not that big a deal, because anything that big won't play well over wireless anyway. That's gonna hold my 160 gig drive after I reformat it to FAT32.

Then once it's set up properly, a computer sees it as another computer with file sharing enabled (SAMBA). So, once I veryfy it's working, I'll map a network drive to it and voila... it'll be like I've got a 160 gig drive on my laptop.

Only thing I'm wondering is... would I be able to get iTunes to see that drive and play music from it just like if it were on the main hard drive itself? I'm thinking only time will tell on that one. I'm determined to make it work though.
