I put both xp pro, and osx down as my favorites, xp pro is great compatibililty and gaming, but mac cant be beat in stability and ease of use, graphics. Right now Im deciding between a powerbook, or a dell inspiron 8600 for my new computer

Burn rented DVD's "DVD SHRINK"...Media Center lets me do a lot
I'm right with ya here. Bought a XP Pro Media Center Edition and it rocks. I tell everyone about the extra stuff I can do with it and they are like "You don't pay for a subscription like TIVO" Nope! "You can burn TV to DVD's and watch them later" Yep! "You can pause live TV" Yep. Best purchase I've made in a while, so much so the wife told me she will never doubt me again, and that says alot.

I got the same kickass computer! It's sooooo awesome, I can't believe I didn't switch back years ago!

Btw, Neil did you see the new g4's w/ the touchpad that has the pda style movement thingie? (hard to explain but check it out... it's cool!)

Anyone try any of the mac servers? LOoks like fun

Super stable, never lets me down..NEVER. Fast, efficient, stable, and even looks good.

Though not supported very well in the game department, I still love it. I use my Mac for productivity, and don't even own a single game.

Cool

lets here from the linux people. I've been dabbling more and more with it and I can't see switching until I get a few key components working. Until then XP Home all the way. SPend the money on pro if ya want. The only differance Is the server/client list function which even though I know how to use I have no use for it at home with a network HD being so cheap.

Problems I havent yet to resolve in linux

None of my USB devices work and drivers seem hard to came by.
This is key since do alot of digital photography and I need to upload pics.

In unbutu I can acces any windows network but the print spooler doesn't function trying to print though a windows box. Acually I can't get it to print at all. WIth Knowpic I can't accsess the Network at all or print or use a usb device.
Unbutu I can't listen to MP3s. No problems with knowpics there except since I can't get an acual driver for the sound card I have to rewire my sound system since I use the digital out in windows and have to use analog with linux. Of course there is the luangage barrier. I know I sound like a stuipid F#$c to those that know linux but I don't understand the file structure and terms. I've used dos and windows for 15 years now even earned an AS in computer science but all my training was in intel/ibm and dos/windows systems and cisco/novell.
Wondering if anyone can 1
give me the .*** file extensiond and what they are
.ini
.iso and what not
2) a list of soures for drivers espesially for a generic USB mass storage device so I can use my CF card

What do I need to do to get linux to print? if you know of any usb print drivers for an
HP 2110 all in one printer

So far all I can do is accsess open office sota buggy though running it from the cd. Assess the web, and move files around. accually I'm writing this using the knoppics version of redhat 9.5 linux

If you havent used linux before go for mandrake, its the best noob linux os, its the easiest to set up and use

list of file extensions:
http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/s...xtensions.html

don't have a cf reader to play with, but much to my surprise, in fedora 1 I plugged in my canon s50, opened the camera software fedora had by default, it worked like a charm. Knoppix may have the same software, look for digikam or something similar under graphics.

As for your other questions, I don't mess with printing much, but I'll see if I can get it to work across my lan & let you know.

laptop - windows server 2003 enterprise
desktop - windows server 2003 enterprise
older desktop - windows server 2003 enterprise

same features as XP, minus a bunch of crap.. runs smoother, faster.. and handles IIS and other features better.. works good for my server apps, as well as handling my workstation needs.. dvds, games, etc, all work fine.. once you find all the settings, all really easy.

*edit*
oops, forgot the other old desktop, running slackware 9, w/ apache

I run a dual boot on my laptop of XP and SuSe9.2.

Everything I do on my XP share, I can do on my SuSe share. Except virus scan, because I don't need to.
%1 may be an exaggeration. Linux can do many, many things that MS can do.
Open Office runs great now and understands all file extensions.
Otherwise, a product made by Code Weavers called Crossover Office allows you to run the MS Office suite on your Linux distribution.
IMHO, Linux is coming. If you are in the industry, you would be well served to familiarize yourself with it.
Major distrubtions are getting much better at writing current drivers. Novell is pumping a lot of $$$ into SuSe. Since Novell OS is by the wayside, this is their chance to get back into the game.
I could go on and on and on preaching the songs of Linux, however, you asked what my favorite OS is.

I've been running XP Pro for a while now.

Hey krasher, how's Mankato? My aunt and uncle live there but I rarely get a chance to visit there but about 10 years ago I went to a pretty wild college party with my cousin and met some really "nice" girls out there.

Seems kind of silly to have a $4000 OS on a personal computer.

10 years ago, (damn I am getting old) I was probably AT that party with you.

Agreed, What with 2003 server on a laptop, esecially with the limited uasablity of the server OS. Works damn good as a server but not an OS??
I had it on my Desktop for a few week to really try it but I couldn't do anything, no DVD no movies no games I did get music out of it after a day of fiddling, web and e-mail worked great.
I'd asume you got the 20 dollar discount through work but still?

Mac OS X by far is the greates operating system I have ever used.

I have a PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5GHZ, 2GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 23" HD Display, Altec Lansing Audio, Wireless periferals, AirPort Express connection to broadband, etc.

I love it! Of course, I make a living out of working on my computer, so I need to have a sweet set up I guess. Probably a bit overboard for graphic design, but what the hell.

I'm not gonna vote since I use computers for a lot of different applications, and have a fave OS for each app...

I use WinXP Pro on my desktop rigs, 2k Pro on my laptop, and Gentoo Linux (which I log into via SSH) on my experimental box. Wish I had a faster testbed, it's a mighty AMD K6-2 @ 350MHz.
