Dual graphic card SLI question

Hey folks, I have a brand new ASUS M3N-HT motherboard that i picked up $130 and two XFX 9800GT video cards. The motherboard has three PCIE ports for running in 3-way SLI. The first graphic card fits on the first port fine, but the second port is no where near accessible since the VGA cooler i have (accelero xtreme) is in the way. My question is, will i be able to run the cards in SLI configuration by putting the first card in the first PCIE port and the second card in the third PCIE port without running into issues?

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Why the heck would they design a mobo that doesn't properly fit modern cards?

Haha, the VGA cooler on my graphic cards are aftermarket and HUGE. Hence the lack of space for the second port. Of course the motherboard will fit any modern card, I can run three video cards if i wanted, but of course, the coolers are in the way.
