Chainsaws are good, yes

I find the game runs much smoother for me and you can see my frames per second in the upper right corner if I run the game at 640x480.

The game was just to jerky at 1024x768 like all the other games I run.
Sometimes Doom 3 would run good at the higher res, then it would lag.
It is not my CPU, it is the graphics card.
The game likes top end cards such as the ATI 9800 XT if you are going to be running it at hi res.

The game still looks very good taking it down to 640x480.
This is the only game I have ever had to crank down for it to run buttery smooth.

Hope you're not in too much of a rush for it:

Gamespot has posted a blurb from id Software's Todd Hollenshead stating that DOOM 3 for the Xbox is unlikely to ship before 2005. Here is his statement:
"It's probably not going to come out this year," Hollenshead told Reuters today. "Back in May, we were kind of hoping we'd have a holiday launch. I'm not sure we're going to get there." Previously, Hollenshead had not leaned one way or the other, offering only neutral statements such as, "It is still up in the air" or "We can't say, at this point, that it's going to come out this year." Hollenshead's latest statement seems to be a concession that id will again take its time to bring Doom 3 to market.
That is indeed sad news for those kiddies out there hoping to get a little DOOM 3 goodness in their stockings this year. Hopefully it doesn't slip too far into 2005.

Crap, the game runs like ˟˟˟˟˟...what am I doing wrong? It's slow when I turn, sometimes the keys are unresponsive and the characters look wierd as if they are boxes put together. I'll try turning off shadows...anyone care to elaborate how to do it?

Oh by the way, I picked up my copy yesterday at Fry's for only $37.99 so you all might want to check it out if you plan to purchase it.

Mohamed, even with my very fast PC and a good vid card, I have to play it at 640x480.
I can have shadows on too, and it runs good.

This game requires a $500 video card such as the Nvidia 9800 or the ATI 9800 Pro or XT card to run good at 1024x768.

This is the only game where I have to run below a 1024x768 res in order to have a decent frame rate.

My youngest son just got done playing it for the past few hours, and he likes it.
Single player is good, multiplayer sucks.

okay good so I'm not the only one with problems. Game is awesome, also you have to go to advanced options to get to shadows and all. I turned off bmp mapping and shadows and it runs better. Still the characters look like boxes. So far I tried to make it back on the second level after something wierd goes on and the zombies wooped my azz

If you want the guy's to look good, you have to have the bump mapping on.
I have all that turned on, and the game looks very good.

I prefer UT 2004 though a heck of a lot more than this game.

Found this on the planetdoom.com forum, give it a try:

This is a guarenteed way to get a MASSIVE performance increase to your game, at the expense of taking up a little more hard drive space (2 gigs approx). I went from running low quality at 800x600 to running High Quality on 1024x768. This improves load times AND framerate/details.

There is a catch! By doing this, you temporarily can't connect to pure multiplayer servers. You have been warned (I'll tell you how to revert it at the end)

After installation, the Doom III Folder consists only of the doom3.exe and some .PK4 files. Those PK4 files includes the entire game (sounds, videos, textures etc.) compressed. They are normally uncompressed in mid game, which is very hard on your CPU. Lets fix this!

1. Make a copy of ALL the files in C:\Program Files\Doom 3\base. This is some big filage, but if you want to revert to MP without reinstalling you need to do it.

2. Unrar the following .pk4 files (just pretend they are .rar's and open them with winrar) into the C:\Program Files\Doom 3\base folder (each one should unrar a single folder such as textures or models):

pak000.pk4
pak001.pk4
pak002.pk4
pak003.pk4
pak004.pk4 (This one has many files, put them all in \Base and over right any that apply.

3. Now delete the files above (pak000-004) or move them to another folder for storage so you can revert to multiplayer.

When you want to revert to multiplayer, restore everything you had before and get rid of the new stuff. I'm not sure if the folder "maps" is the same or not, so make sure you back that up.

When in normal mode, you should have "maps" "savegames" "config.spec" "doomConfig.cfg" "doomkey" "game00.pk4" and "gamex86.dll", nothing else.
ALSO! If you open DoomConfig.cfg (C:\programfiles\doom3\base) in notepad and change

seta image_cacheMegs "32"

to a higher number, such as 96 or 128 you will see a big increase too. Go for it bad boys!

I know this will work great for all of you, it has for me!
(NOTE I am not the one that came up with this I am just passing it along!)

BTW I can run my Doom at High with everything on at 30-35FPS and my cards a 5200! also I am running at 640 x 480

Actually, not to promote anything, but technically it is easy to do, find someone to install into your computer with the original discs, and that's it. You don't need no disc or anything to make it work.

haha....

Its not that I want to steal it, I just dont want to waste my money....I'm running a P4 2.0 Ghz, 512 ram, Geforce 3 video card....

my system would have a hell of a time running it.....I think its gonna come out for xbox, if it hasnt already. I know the graphics wont be as good, but at least I dont have to worry about it being choppy and stuff...

Man I tried this today, it only runs marginally better, did you (or anyone else for that matter) do this and get better results? I still have to turn off shadows and I run 640x480 with low quality (it's horrible to tell you the truth).

i've been playing d3 for the past week. Great game and even my amd barton 3200+ with an overclocked gf4ti4400 is barely hanging in there in 800x600 resolution.
Check these guys out screaming like girls.

Anyone else make it to the Hell level? It took forever to beat that boss, but I finally did . This game is definatly BADA$$. I havn't screamed like little girls yet but there are parts that made me jump out of my chair and make the hair on my neck stand on end. Lights out and surround sound is the only way to play!!
