AOL Instant Messenger
I have been using this for a few years now, and reinstalled it a few days ago after my format.
1. Two problems are popping up.
When I fire it up, I get a few pop ups from them for advertising.
No, this is not spyware, it is in the settings somewhere, and I had it fixed before the format.
I can not find in the options how to turn off their adds.
2. I use Outlook for my main email, but also use Outlook Express for another account.
When you fire up Outlook Express, it auto launches AOL IM.
There is in Express in the ops panel to turn this feature off, but it still fires up IM when you launch Express.
Any ideas how to fix this?

I have been through the same thing. I cant turn em of now,
Also even though I told it not too, it put yahoo tool bar in IE. Also it put a hundred icons and links to aol with broadband all over my computer. Everytime I start i have to close three windows. Arg. yeah I could use the help too if anyone figures it out.
I also used to have Dead Aim, but i guess they are making you pay for it now. bummer

I guess AOL wants to push their adds on you now, as there is no way to turn off the two pop ups that come up when you launch it with the new version.

The cure is to uninstall the new version like I have and use an older one.
I hope I have a copy of it, as I do not like having to click out of two ads each time it fires up.
Plus during the install, a newb might be tempted to install the Wild Tangent and Weather Bug items that it tries too.
DO NOT do that, as they are both Spyware proggies.

I think I've fixed the pop up windows. Under Preferences go to Sign On/Off. I unchecked "Show AIM.com window at sign on". No more stupid window to close.
I think the answer to your second question is also on that same options screen. Try unchecking "Make AIM my default instant messaging program".
I would love to use Trillian but for some reason it says my aol password is incorrect.

Sid, that took care of number 2 after I unchecked make IM the default messenger prog.
It does not launch now when I fire up Express.
Thanks.
But...that box to uncheck to show/not show AIM.com window at sign-on has always been unchecked since I installed it.
What version are you running?
The newest one that is having this problem is only affected by this, and the version number is 5.9.3690.

I'm running the same exact version. You may want to try checking the box, shut down aim, then starting back up and unchecking. It may think the box has a null value instead of NO. Only other thing I can think of is try reinstalling.
When I unchecked that box I didn't make any other changes. I even checked and unchecked the box once more to make sure it works.
Good luck.

Corry, i followed the link posted above for middle man. Under the download section they have the last dozen or so verison of aim, also the program is very very very cool . the program middle man itself dosent work with the newest version of aim. Just uninstall the newest one, go to the site and download the middle man and an older verison of aim and be happy.

go to www.oldversion.com from there you can download older versions of AIM. i suggest the highest versoin in the 4.* area.

Ya, but chat no workie.
I clicked on the Chat link for the forum here and it launches Trillian, but no chat window pops up like it does for AIM.
I remember adding code to the link on the forum when we set up chat here so Trillian will work, but it is not working for me.
