More useless crap bundled in with the O/S by Micro☺☺☺☺s 'partners' (read 'paid advertisments') that'll create an endless parade of pop-ups and 'system notifications' on your computer, in an attempt to get you to pay for 'upgrades', which really means extortion payments to leave you alone on your own computer.

Tabbed browisng on IE. Wow! What an original idea.. I wish Firefox would come up with something like that because it sounds useful.. Oh, wait a second.. that's been a feature on Firefox since forever, and is why I stopped using IE forever as the stinking ☺☺☺☺ pile it is. What's next for IE I suppose? Maybe plugins to improve functionality? Firefox beat you there. Browser restoration of tabs? Firefox. Easy customizability of core features. Firefox. A browser that does not crash and burn on every website. Firefox. Now if only someone would come out with an app to completely rip IE out of windows and replace the file browsing with Firefox. Ooh, I almost forgot to mention that Windows has used the carrot and stick approach to get people to install that M$ authentication update (genuine advantage I believe) that tells you if your copy of XP is genuine or not. If you don't install it you can't get the latest IE or aero for XP! Oh no! Install a defective DRM tool to get two apps I don't want? HA!

ive got vista on my new laptop and have had 0 problems but i also dont do much on it as of programs. i like it also cause im not to computer capable and it is very easy for me to use and understand. i an find things alot easier on my computer.

 

my motherboard fried last winter and i had to replace my p.c. about 3 weeks after vista tookover the market so there were no xp computers left, vista is the worst thing i have ever had to deal with from microsoft....continual problems and it seems to get worse everytime i install an automatic update, and all i do w/ my pc is net surf and use word and excell....you do what you will, but i'd avoid it like the plague!

 

We've got to purchase a new computer for Estimating Takeoffs at work - seems you can't get a PC with anything but Vista. Are we hosed?

 

You can order from Dell with whatever operating system you want. We just received 12 new units with XP prof. Don't see why you can't get what you want.

 

Like my earlier post I run Vista at home and love it.

 

I tolerate it on one of my home computers simply because it's fun to play with. It has lots of neat little graphics upgrades and there are some things that were made better in terms of user-friendliness. The integrated search functionality is also very cool.

However, it is so very buggy and slow that if I had to depend on it or use it for more than just messing around, the entire workstation would be in my backyard on fire from a fit of rage.

Hopefully, as was mentioned earlier in this thread, it will eventually become as reliable and stable as XP finally did.

I would not recommend it if you actually need to use the computer.

 

Just checked Dell.com. Seems you can only get the XPS series with XP. We don't need quite that much processing power or expense. Is that the series you got?

I just wanted to post that I LOVE Ubuntu as well. That would be all I ever used if I wasn't a developer for a Windows based company And I think Compiz and Beyrl effects are better than Vista's Aero desktop even though there are still some bugs with hibernation.

just got a "new" refurb'ed HP machine with vista home premium.

it's a mess. hardware 3rd party drivers are still iffy...

i hate the explorer or MY COMP view.

START menu looks like crap.

i'm thinking of dumping it all together and just go with xp pro...

you can try to run WINE and see if it will run.

 

Should Ubuntu be a clean install or can it be a dual boot with XP?

 

With Ubuntu I usually have the Ubuntu install shrink my XP partition (selectable size) and use the free space for Linux.
When you boot your machine it will ask you which one to boot.
When running Ubuntu you can then use your xp partion and access your files.

I've was asked to do some networking in Vista by a family member. I am just getting to old to start looking for stuff in all different places then it used to be. Also al the redundant security questions got old very quick.
It didn't do anything for me, XP doesn't do. An operating system is supposed to manage your file system and run programs in an orderly manner.
XP does that well and efficiently.

From win3.1 -> win95/98 -> windows 2000 where big improvements. XP to Vista not so much in my opinion.

 

This was a big concern for me when I was choosing a laptop for college. Luckily I got mine after most of my friends and after seeing Vista at work, I decided it wasn't that amazing...I"m now converted to my macbook

A lot of Apps run fine under Wine in Ubuntu but some don't. A lot of times you can't use the latest version of the Windows software which is a bummer. The cool thing about Linux is the open source community and the alternative FREE software which is often times just as good as closed source software but FREE!

 

i got vista on my compaq.....its slow loading up when your start it up....my wireless works its just that i set up my network wrong and i cant connect to mine but i can connect to other networks
