$25 router, anyone?

FON is basically a movement to share your wireless access to registered users. Not sure if that's legal or not. They ship you the router with their firmware on it, but you should be able to flash it back to Linksys's firmware.

Yeup, you can.

The WRT54GL is a cool little box, I have one right here. Stock it's running Linux and the LinkSys firmware is open source under the GPL. There are a few replacement OS's for it (FON is one) that provide a lot more features than the original OS. One cool thing is that ALL of them allow for cranking up the transmit power.
