Uniden 538; Sized for DIN Opening?

So the Uniden 520 was stolen out of the 4Runner and I'm looking to replace it with the Uniden 538. As you may or may not know it has a front fire speaker which is cool, but also looks like it might fit better in certain respects...

My question is whether or not the 538 fits in a DIN slot. That is, if it will fit under the Alpine CD deck I have in there now.

I've looked everywhere online and cannot find the dimensions of the CB anywhere. I remember it being something like seven inches, which is the size of the DIN slot under the Alpine; at least the width.

So if anyone has info on this I'd appreciate it.

I'm not so jazzed about the weatherband, but the prospect of it fitting with an OEM style justifies the extra price and extra bells and whistles over the 520.

And if it happens to be too big for the DIN slot, does anyone know of a CB manufactured that will fit in that bastard DIN slot?

Thanks all.

So I searched and found another discussion about the 538, but never any resolution as to whether it'll fit in the DIN slot.

There is mention of the Cobra 18WXST fitting though. Anyone have good experiences with this particular radio? I remember asking about it in March when I got the (now stolen) Uniden 520 and being told that it was a "6 month radio."

Now, I'm not abusive on any of my stuff, but still, I want things to last. Especially in an 'off-road' capacity.

So will this be a record? responding twice to my own post while all you guys party in your other, cooler threads...

I'm looking more seriously at the Cobra 18 now, so any opinions are good opinions at this point.

And one last thing,

"Bump."

Uniden Pro 538W will not fit all th way in a DIN opening 2nd gen

I just tried putting in the Uniden Pro 538W into my 1994 2nd gen and here's the results:

It does fit through the standard DIN opening however it is too deep to seat in correctly. It's still too deep with a 90degree adapter for the antenna. The AC/heater duct in back of the radio hole, towards the driver's side, gets in the way and does not allow the CB to seat properly for a DIN mount. If you still want to get it in you will have to create a new mount point on the CB and DIN brackets. Move the CB about 3/4 of an inch out to get it to fit. I'll post pics when I am done. I'm waiting on the antenna cable and the antenna to ship to me.

Well I take that back about posting up pics when I get it done. Apparently I had a defective unit, DOA, but I screwed into the case and now it's a non-returnable item and pretty much a doorstop. If anyone needs spare parts from the Uniden 538 Pro let me know and I'd be happy to ship it to you. I guess I'll get the Cobra 18WXST it's only about 6.5 inches deep and should fit in nice and flush, no PA though. I guess it's the universe's way of telling me my mouth does not need to be amplified.

I installed a Uniden 538W in the slot under the radio in my 88 4runner. It fits nicely with the width but sticks out a 1/2 inch or more which makes the microphone connector bump my shifter. Still works but is annoying. I'm hoping to find a solution to this problem since I can't think of another good location for this large CB.
