IMHO COMMS in the military is one of the biggest issues for everybody, yet being forced to do it kind of sucks. but yea the guys that did the FL to NC broadcast were pretty proud of themselves. the farthest ive personally gone with COMM was about 16 miles, and it was over a big hill. we were in the mojave desert on a training excercise, COMM specific.

the one we were using was an HF specific radio. but we have multiple radios that cover all freqs. i would say they are more like HAM radios than a CB, because everything has to be programmed in.

Update, just installed the Yaesu ATAS-120a antenna.
Wish the rest (main radio, wiring) was as easy as this
It took less than thirty seconds to take off the Diamond antenna and replace it with the new one.

'Tis big, but not to big.
The antenna itself is a lot flimsier than the Diamond, so I am sure it is going to be whipping around a lot.
I have not taken the beast for a drive yet, so I am not sure how much whipping it will do.
Maybe not that much...

Yes, that is tree spooge on the hood, in fact the whole rig is covered with it.
A combo of dirt, tree crap from home and work, dew, space time continuum fallout, ect.
To cold to wash the rig by hand, will have to take it to a coin op sometime to knock it down to clean paint.

Thanks.
Still no radio, coax, or wires installed.

I have sixteen days off for Christmas break, I may try to get some of that done, or wait until next year.

Took a sixty mile road trip today for a family holiday get together, the antenna did fine.
It looks flimsy, but it did not really move that much.

That link to the review you provided said some very positive things about the 857D radio and ASAT-120a antenna.
The key is a good ground.

Cool, glad you got your setup.

My faceplate and antenna are the only items installed.
The radio unit itself is still sitting in the box patiently waiting for warm weather to get installed.
