GPS suggestions

I am looking for a GPS, one that we can plot routes into using a matching mapping program from my computer. I'd like to use it for both my truck and boat.

Can anyone help me with some suggestions?

What do I look for when shopping for a GPS system?

Memory is a big thing. In addition, I'd do some research on what programs are compatible. Uploading maps is only possible with software that is recognized by the manufacturer. So Garmin's will only receive maps from MapSource. And Magellans will only receive maps from their authorized maker(can't remember the name). You can however upload waypoints from several programs to pretty much any GPS. Look up ExpertGPS. It's a great program. I've had no problems at all hooking it up to my Garmin Rino 120.

As far as map software goes. You can try USAPhotomaps. It is a free program (please donate) that at last check was under 1meg. It lets you view topo, and arial photos of just about anyware. You can do routes and waypoints and upload to your GPS. and it is not proprietory so it will work with garmin, magellin, ect....

Thumbs up

This is the unit I have Garmin GPS. This is a awesome GPS, that you can program from you computer, or from the unit itself. What I like about it, is that I can connect it to my laptop and use it just as a receiver! I can do all sorts of detail maps with it, if you get the software with it. There is a learning curver if you never used one, but it's awesome when you learn it. I just used mine on a trip to Boston, it worked like a champ.

In trying to save money, I'm trying to find a dual purpose one that I can use for Marine navigation and with the truck. I want to do some exporing on the Puget Sound with my new boat. I can stay along the shores but with a good GPS and software, I might better know where I am and where I'm going.

I replied to your PM with a couple questions that would help in a suggestion of which models would work for you. What price range are you thinking, and do you want a color screen? The price question may answer the other question for you, color screens are more money. As far as using it with your computer, most will do that, although only to a limited degree. You can dump your position from the GPS to the computer, and then run mapping software on the computer to see where you are, or you can trip plan on the computer and dump the waypoints and routes in to the GPS, but in most cases you can't see the same information on the computer screen and the GPS screen in real time. In other words they share numerical data but not video data. Let me know the price range and I can throw out some ideas for you on appropriate models.

I had the same problem. Dual use can be such a . . . well, you know. My solution was a Garmin GPS12 (which I already owned), a used laptop computer and the Maptech software for Land and Marine. Total investment of about $500. I loaded everything to the laptop hard drive so I don't have to carry CD's. Works great.

Maptech web site: http://www.maptech.com/

Also do a search for GPS mapping software and try the Cap'n website at: http://www.thecapn.com/ and Capt. Jacks at: http://www.capjack.com/

All of these have great packages available at different price levels.

I would recomend

I would recomend the Garmin GPSMAP 176C or its new replacement the GPSMAP 276C. I have both and use them between my 4Runner, RV, Boat and daily driver. Both units have Color screens, use memory cards and are waterproof. The 276c also has autorouting.

If you have any specific questions about these GPS's feel free to contact me.

P.S. A good place to purchase a GPS that I recomend is GPSNOW.com, a division of 4x4books. I have had nothing but excelent service from this vendor.
