Garmin Vista questions?

I own a Garmin eTrex Vista and first I need to learn and use it more. Can it be used in my 4runner? Do I need an external antenna? Do they make an antenna for it? If I mount it in the windshield do I need an antenna?

Unless something has changed recently, an external antenna is not available for it. If you get a dash or windshield suction mount you will be surprised at how good your reception will be.

Looking at the Garmin site they don't show an antenna. I wasn't sure if there was an aftermarket one. I also haven't bought any map software for it either. Any thoughts?

They renamed the "City" to I believe "metroguide" V8 is the current. I have it for my Vista C as well as the TOPO. The metro- seems to have all the 4x4 roads the TOPO does. For wheeling the TOPO is best I think because it names the creeks and shows where on the mountain (elevation) you are. The metro just shows a line.

If you want to use it for paved roads and stuff, the metro is by far the best choice. Load the CD/DVD on your home PC select what area you want to download for more details to the GPS.

Vista's have internal antennas, no way to hook external. I was supprised how little it takes for them to loose signal. You will never keep signal putting it on the seat beside you, infact it may not even see the Satellites, but using the window mount thing it works well if your not in deep woods.
