I am highly considering the Cx over the Cs. The Cx is $20 more and you gain the SIRF receiver and the SD microcard slot (very important for long trips) but loose 2 hours of battery life and the compass/barometer function. As long as I can store LOTS of maps on the SD card with the ability to toggle between city and topo, this unit should work nicely for me.
I appreciate any comments you may have.

What's up, man
It is *not* possible to store the city and the topo at the same time. That is probably the biggest shortcoming of the CSi dont know anything about the Cx, but if you can store different maps on cards, i'd probably get that over the Cs. You konw, you'll probably use it in your vehicle 90% of the time anyways, so just get yourself a power cord. gpsgeek.com is a good place to get that kind of stuff. and as far as using the compass/barometer, no big deal. i dont think i've ever used that except when playing around with it.

Hey Bob, miss me yet?
So the inability to store city and topo data isn't due to a lack of space on your Cs, but rather the unit can only store one type of map for a given area at a time? Ergh. I suppose instead of buying one 512 MB SD card I can buy two 256's with different maps on each. Swapping them will not be fun though.

Yup, you're absolutely right. I suppose you could get around this limitation by keeping road maps and topos on separate SD cards if you were worried about the road map hierarchy interfering with use of your topos.

Not sure if that helps anyone, I assume the the 60 has the same functions as the 76.

By default it is City over Topo, But you can go into the setup features and change this manually on the unit, I think itis by location. I load both in and if I need to the Topo I switch it manually when I need it, usually after I get to the trail using the city maps.

My vista C also has this feature. in the map setup page when looking at maps press the menu button, should give you the options.
What I wish is that I could view topo, but use city for routing. the topo is such a nicer view than city.

Got it to Work on my 76CS.
Loaded all Socal Maps from Death Valley South to the Border, both City Select and Topo.
Get to the Map setup display. In the map screen press menu, map setup, scroll to the i (information) icon then use the cursor to deselect showing all the City maps. Reboot (Off-On) and the Topos display. The routing info from the city selects is no longer available, only info from the base maps. You can also get to the map setup display through the setup screen.
It's some what of a pain, but beats using the PC to reload the maps.
I assume it would work for a 60 as well, from what I understand inside they are the same unit.

I'm confident the 60 will do the same thing, looks like most people here prefer that model. I find I need about 100M+ of memory to load everything I want, thats why the 76 works better for me. They didn't offer the x option when I bought mine.

When I downloaded the BlueChart, it disabled the CitySelect. I looked for how to use both in the manual and on the website, and couldn't find it. I called Garmin and they explained to me that both could be loaded on the unit at once, but only one set could be active at once.
You must deselect all your topo, water, etc. maps to use the CitySelect, and vice versa.
Load all you want from the computer, then, on the Map view on the GPS, press Menu > Map Setup > then select or deselect each block.

Glad I could be of help- I'll have to say this as well- every time I have called Garmin, there has been a long wait to get through, but once you speak to a representative, they are very helpful, polite, and spend as much time as needed to help you understand your issue.

Looks Like Jeffires has it figured out and the 60 works the same way.
I tried activating and deactivating the different map sets and there is no problem going boack and forth from one to the other. To use City Select you don't have to deactivate the Topos, to Use topos you have to deselect City Select.
