I dont understand how the coax cable is at a 90 degree bend when mine is verticle. Is that a certain coaxial cable?

 

Mine is mounted in the same location, it seems to work well. Even whjen the Deathrunner flies it doesn't hi tthe body. I'm more worried about trees and brush, I hit em all the time with teh 4'.

I actually just took mine off today, I'm going to mount it on my spare tire carrier when it is built.

the antenna is a 4' firestik.

as for the CB, it's a midland 1001Z. it's mounted to the plastic above it with a couple small screws. my friend welded a piece across the bracket to "enclose" it so the CB just slides into it. so no |__|, but a rectangle instead.

the coax cable is just a firestik cable. it works fine with it like that, despite the bends...

 

i need to mount mine there.....I'm not sure how much worse the reception would be from there as apposed to the roof, mine wont stay on the roof over 60 mph. Its magnetic, but in a semi flat area i can pick up clear conversation from one side of nashville to the other (hermitage to ashland city) which is 33 miles on roads.....so proabably about 20-25 mile range. I was surprised at how well it picks up. I just need something sturdier for the interstate. I put my CB underneath the CD player, Its just kinda wedged in there, but it holds and its easy to take in and out if i need it.

Taken on Bear Mt. (Ft. Hunter Liggett) near Lake San Antonio north of Paso Robles, CA circa 1981. Paso 4Wheelers were working communications and assistance on the annual horse endurance ride. I was net controller (duh!). HyGain Super Penetrator 5/8 wave ground plane mounted in a custom bracket bolted to the bed.

 

Bringing back an old thread but did that mounting bracket come with the antenna or did it have to bought separately?

Any problems with it hitting the body or breaking off?

 

I know it's been a week or so since you asked this question, but I'll give my .02 anyway.

I've seen quite a few guys run this exact same setup w/ zero complaints.

Oh and most places that sell a firestik antenna also sell that mount. The antennas don't necessarily come w/ these mounts, but if you buy your antenna at the right place, then just add the mount to your order.

Hi all, what's the thread size on a firestick??

I like the look of that tailgate mount, but don't like the firesticks, I find them too ridgid for my tastes, I prefer the base loaded whips like the Wilsons or the K40's, although the base is a little fat for the tailgate mount..

Here in the UK the standard thread size for most antenna is 3/8th, but the firestick looks larger.

 

Well, a little update from me, I can't find this mount anywhere in the UK

Typical bl00dy Britain, can't get it, and no-one I've been in contact with will ship to the UK either.

As far as the antenna goes, I've looked at some K40 fibreglass super flexi's, seem to be just what I want, a bit like a firestick only thinner, so more flexible, and a top loaded coil for better performance.

Only problem is no-one will ship to the UK

Why is it so hard to get good stuff in the UK?

So my search goes on for a good mount and antenna, and I'm off to the Welsh mountains at the beginning of May for a weekend of offroading (wheelin') and would have liked to get the antenna sorted by then, but it'll have to wait I guess.

 

The way Mike (4runnerkid) has his done is the way I'd like to do mine but; I have read so much on ground plane & "the top of the antenna receives & the bottom of it transmits" (or vice versa) that I'm afraid it'll hamstring the usability of the radio. Can anyone say they've compared a magnetic mount center of the roof like a "little wil" to a fiberglass antenna mounted like Mike has done for reception & transmission differences?

If I get a CB I'd much prefer the antenna bolted to the body like Mikes is; I think it looks cleaner & would make running the coax a lot easier....for clean install I mean. But I wouldn't want to sacrifice 1/3 of the units ability just so it looks good.

 

The antenna will transmit and recieve throughout it's whole length, but will be more intense at the coil ( if it has one, the 102" whip obviously dosen't have one)
The firesticks are "top loaded" so will tx/rx more from the top 12" of the antenna, wheras the bottom loaded whips will tx/rx more from the bottom.
