CB & Antenna install?

I just purchased a Cobra75 WXST CB and an SB300 Remote Speaker. I purchased a splitter to use my existing SS 31" radio power antenna. The hookup looks straight forward but I have to get an SWR meter to adust my signal. My questions are: what SWR signal should I try to obtain, is the splitter the best way to go vs a CB antenna and how do you adjust the splitter adusting screw for the radio (what do I want to achieve with the radio). If I have to use a CB antenna, I would like to use one as short as possible mounted on my roll bar (whom makes a good one and what length). My truck is driven to cruise nights, shows, events, etc. and I do not need extreme range, just like to talk to people about what is ahead on the highway, talk to others going to the events, etc. Thank you for the help.
