Who's got an audio system that still leaves room in the cargo area?

Scarbro22, it is done in that pic, sort-of. The interior panel goes over it, route the wires, and that is it.

If you planning to try something like this definitely glue on some backing behind the speakers to keep down reflections and so it doesn't resonate. Something like a heavy fiber pad.

To me and all the people I've done them for I've had no complaint's. I myself am more of a basshead so if I was sporting a runner I'd do something else, and also sacrifce some more room. As far as the difficulty level it would all depend on what woofer and how you wanted it finished as far as grill, vynil, etc...but I usually charge about $400 at the shop I'm at. It's a good day, day and a half project just for fiberglass curing time. So if your good with wood and glass it's not too bad. The JL box sounds good too has a little bit more bass, but your sacrificing space for the more bass. I don't like the big carpet thing look very much, so that's why I personally wouldn't get one. 4runr - Looks awesome! Did you seal up every little hole? Or is the padding enough? What size are those speakers?

Andrey - Looks great too! What year 4runner is that? Looks like an 8" or a 10"? How does it sound?

I'm thinking 15 is way to crazy for what I need now... These are some amazing setups!

My 4Runner is 2001, SR5 model.

As far as sub, that is 10" speaker. Originally I had MobileAuthority sub as you can see from the first picture. It sounded horrible, but upgrading to top-of-the line Audiobahn made the tremendous differences. Right now I can honestly say that the sound I get out of my sub is much better than what I've heard from many other 2x10" or 2x12" boxes. But the best part that I like about my setup is surpised look on everyone's faces wondering where such good bass comes from

guys,

for reference's sake, take a look at the last two pics on this page from my sound deadening write up:

http://www.4runners.org/articles/sou...floorpics.html

that'll give you an idea of how much empty space 4runr and andrey had to work with.

I used to use a 15" Kicker Solobaric, older round ones. You can do a false floor setup like I did (page on sounddomain ) but you'd need a really low profile sub. I forgot what company made them (been out of the loop for a while), but there was a company that made inverted subs that had the magnet in front of the cone and the cone was made of carbon fiber. Very distinct looking woofers and they were really really low profile. I'm guessing the 15" might have been 6-7" deep, which is what you would need so that the false floor wouldn't be too high. I was so tight on space that I had to cut a hole in the bottom of my box and fiberglass it in, just to gain a 1/2" of clearance behind the magnet so that the pole vent could breathe.

Another way would be to build a enclosure that goes over the wheel well, but with a 15", the enclosure would hit the cargo cover, and it would be obvious that you had something in the back.

You could also try to mount the sub with the magnet sticking out so that the enclosure doesn't have to be as big, but then you have to worry about protecting the magnet and frame, and in your case, your bikes sticking your sub :pat:

I tried figuring out countless configurations with the solobaric, but none of them was reasonable (or feasible). I loved that sub. Played so deep and sounded so good. sniff sniff...

Check the last couple of pics...

Solid - no movement, no rattles and plenty of bass.

I'm running two kicker comp 12's in the back of my 4runner. They work pretty good with low power but require at least 1.25 sq. ft. of air space. I'd say it took about up about half of my cargo area. If you are interested, I'll post a pic of them.

Hi all!

Bob - Thanks! I found your page in my travels, but forgot to bookmark it! great to know what to expect with the "skin" off.

DuB - really like the false floor! How deep is it? I don't see how you only 1.1 cubic ft? Is the rest of the space amps? The local shop loaned me a 15" JL... the depth is about 7" I've been thinking about the wheelwell after seeing all the systems here. But I think that will limit me to a 10, maybe a 12 if I'm lucky.. I'd be okay if I didn't want to be able to still use it as a truck!

bd - JL enclosure looks stock! Looks like you really use your 4runner. If I can't fit the 15" somehow.. looks like a good way to go..

Eric, AgRunner - Pics would be appreciated! Trying to get as many ideas as possible.

Thanks for all the ideas, this forum rocks! I've got an idea... I'll do a sketch and post it. I'd be interested to see what you all think.

The company is Illusion Audio. Their ND line of subs are incredible SQ subs ... the ND15 has a mounting depth of 4".

There we go! Thanks trangk. 4"??? wow. Maybe I should've used one of those...

Andy, the sub box is only the back 1.5' or so of the cargo area. the part by the seats holds the amps. And since the false floor is 6" in height, it took about 2 and a half feet of width to get the 1.1 cu ft I needed.

I need a 12". There just isn't that much airspace in the side panel. I'm good, but not a magician...

Here's a quick pic. You'll have to excuse the mess. The weather hasn't been great and I haven't had the time to clean her up. You get the idea.

The box has 1.25 sq. ft. of air space per side.

As to earlier in this thread when people were debating 15" v. 12" v. 10".

The difference is that a 15" sub will deliver deeper bass than a 12" (same with 12 v. 10)! The bigger the size the lower the sound. The size does NOT make it a speaker cable of handeling more watts or being clearer at higher volumes.

For you guys with a big box in the back, how do you feel it impacts performance? Thanks everyone!

I'm not too sure what exactly you are asking. The Kicker Comps require at least 1.25 sq. ft. of airspace. So that's what I went with. I'm actually thinking about taking it out and putting my one 12 back in because I don't really have the need for the 2 12s anymore. I'd rather have the space. Also, I did all my system on a budget. I didn't spend much on it. I got both subs new and the box (3/4" MDF with gold plated connectors) for a little under $150.

Maybe in the future I'll go to a 15.
